Apple introduced lock screen customization on iPhones with the iOS 16 update last year. However, the company omitted similar improvements on the iPad. With the iPadOS 17 update, Apple is finally bringing the same neat personalization options to customize the iPad lock screen like a pro.
iPadOS 17 brings Astronomy, Beautiful Weather and other fun emoji backgrounds to personalize your iPad. It looks and feels better on your iPad’s large screen and even animates when you rotate the screen. You can even put widgets on the lock screen and customize the clock with different fonts and colors. Without further ado, let’s get started.
1. Check out the new wallpapers
Apple’s default Astronomy, Weather, and Kaleidoscope wallpapers look stunning on the big screen. You can easily check and apply them from iPad Settings. Here’s what you need to do.
Step 1: Open Settings on iPad and scroll to Wallpaper. Click Add new wallpaper.
Step 2: Scroll down to check out the new series of Weather & Astronomy, Kaleidoscope, Emoji and Unity wallpapers. Choose Saturn from the Astronomy section.
Step 3: Give it the proper permissions to access your location. Click Add.
Step 4: You can apply the same wallpaper to your home screen or tap Customize Home screen to choose a different image.
Step 5: You can change the background color, add a gradient, choose a different image from the Photos app, or apply a similar blur effect. Click Done.
Check your new wallpaper is working on lock screen and home screen.
Apply Live Wallpaper on iPad
With iPadOS 17, you can apply a live wallpaper to your lock screen. It adds an impressive effect to your iPad lock screen. Check it out in action.
Step 1: Open the Photos app on your iPad. Go to the Live Photos section from the sidebar.
Step 2: Choose your favorite photo. Tap the Share icon in the top left corner and select Use as Wallpaper.
Step 3: Turn on motion from the bottom right corner. Tap Add and set it as a wallpaper pair.

2. Check the Lock Screen Widget on iPad
Now that you’ve applied your favorite wallpaper on your iPad, it’s time to make it work with some lock screen widgets. Announced with iOS 16, lock screen widgets are also available on iPad.
Step 1: Open your iPad’s lock screen and press and hold it. Select Customize.
Step 2: Choose your lock screen.
Step 3: Click Add Widget. You can check the list of add-on suggestions and review supported applications from the same menu.
Step 4: You can tap a widget or drag it to the sidebar to add it to the lock screen. You can add small, medium and large size widgets.
While the selection is limited at the moment, we expect third-party developers to add support for lock screen widgets when Apple releases iPadOS 17 to the public in the fall.
The best part is that these widgets are interactive. You can open a specific article from Safari’s Reading List widget or complete a task from the Reminders widget without opening the app. The implementation is in place.
3. Customize Watch Style
The default clock style with white font can be boring for some people. You can easily edit it with the steps below.
Step 1: Open your iPad’s lock screen and press and hold it. Select Customize.
Step 2: Tap the clock and it will open the Fonts & Colors menu.
Step 3: Tap the globe icon to choose from Arabic, Indian Arabic, Devanagari, Khmer and Burmese styles. You can change the font style, adjust the font thickness, and even change the color.
When you change the font color, the same will be applied to your widgets for a unified look.
4. Create a new lock screen
iPadOS 17 also allows you to create several lock screens for different purposes. For example, you can create a lock screen during work hours and choose another screen with a personal photo at home.
Step 1: Go to the Wallpaper menu in iPad Settings.
Step 2: Tap ‘Add new wallpaper’ and follow the steps as in the first section to create a wallpaper pair with custom clock widgets and fonts.
Step 3: Check all your lock screen and home screen combinations from the same menu. Press ‘Set as current’ to apply the pair.
