When making recommendations, the first thing Instagram does is determine ratings for posts featured on the Explore page. Instagram determines this by evaluating posts that you have previously saved, liked, and commented on. It then checks other users who have interacted with those posts and looks at those users’ interests (as well as related posts). Therefore, you can see such posts the next time you open your Instagram Explore page.

- Post Info: Instagram looks at a post’s popularity based on how well users like, share, comment, and save the post. All of these signals are more important in Discover than Stories and Feeds.
- Personal history with the poster’s account: Most of the posts on the Discover page are from users you’ve never connected with. However, interacting with them at some point will communicate to Instagram that you like the content they post.
- Your Activity: These signals focus on posts you’ve responded to before. They also look at how you interact with posts on the Discover page.
- About the poster: Instagram checks how many times other users have recently interacted with the poster’s account. This way, it can discover engaging content from more accounts.
Now that you know how Explore on Instagram works, let’s discuss how to manage what appears on the Explore page. You’ll need to check Settings Accessible after tapping on Profile Picture in the bottom right corner in the Instagram app.
Method 1: Reset search history
This method is probably the easiest when it comes to managing your Instagram Explore page. However, if you find that the content on the Explore page differs from your interests, the first thing you should try is resetting your search history. Check out how to do this in the steps below:
Step 1: Launch Instagram on your iPhone or Android.
Step 2: Go to the bottom right corner of the app and tap on the Profile icon.
Step 3: At the top right of the profile page, tap the Menu icon represented by three dashes.

Step 6: In the group named Data and History, tap Clear search history.

Method 2: Select Not interested in the post
Another simple way to manage your Explore page is to select posts that you are not interested in. This will remove those posts from your Explore page. Here’s how to manually tweak your Instagram Explore page this way:
Step 1: Launch Instagram on iPhone or Android.
Step 2: At the bottom of the app, tap the magnifying glass icon representing the Explore page.
Step 3: Select any post that doesn’t appeal to you, then tap the post’s 3-dot menu.
Step 4: Select Not interested. This will remove the post from your Explore page, and Instagram notes recommending fewer such posts.
Method 3: Manage Instagram Follows
As we mentioned earlier, Instagram makes Discover post recommendations based on certain criteria. One such criterion is the type of account you follow. If you don’t want to see certain content, you may need to unfollow the accounts that post it. Here’s how to unfollow an account on Instagram:
Step 1: Launch Instagram on your device.
Step 2: Go to the Profile Page by tapping the icon at the bottom left of the page.
Step 3: Go to the top of the page and click Following.
Step 4: Scroll through the list of accounts on the next page. Each account has Tracking right next to it. If you see someone who doesn’t want to follow anymore, click Following to unfollow.
The hashtags you follow will also determine the type of content you see on your Explore page. Unfollowing a hashtag on Instagram is similar to unfollowing an account. Here’s how to do this:
Step 1: Open the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android.
Step 2: Select your profile picture in the lower right corner.
Step 3: Click on Tracking Count at the top left and go to the Hashtags section.
Step 4: Select the hashtag you want to unfollow.
Step 5: Tap the Following button next to the relevant hashtag and select unfollow. Your account immediately stops tracking these hashtags.
And because of that, you’ll stop seeing posts and videos related to that hashtag.
Fix Instagram notifications not working
Managing the Explore page on Instagram is a tedious activity. If you don’t like the content displayed there, you can grasp the problem and try to sort it out there. While there are no guarantees, results will take a while to appear and may not be immediate.
