How to Manage Personal Information On Your Google Account

By doing a Google search yourself, you can see what kind of information is available to the public. The information displayed may be personal items that you want to keep private. Although search results are cumulative from various sources such as social networks and blogs, you also contribute to the results.

One in five people own a Google Account, which could stem from their use of Android or ownership of Gmail. While creating a Google Account, users have to provide certain information about themselves. However, this information may not be exclusive to you and Google. Hence the reason you can see them on search engines. Here are the steps to manage personal information on your Google Account:

How to edit or delete personal information on your Google account

Information such as your date of birth, gender or phone number is personal information and you do not want it to be made public. To edit or delete such information, you should do the following:

Step 1: Open the Google Account page in a web browser and sign in with your account details.

Step 2: On the left side of the new window, click Personal Information.

Step 3: Scroll down the page and click on the card that says ‘Choose what others see.’ You will arrive at the About Me page with your Basics, Contacts, Jobs and Education.

Step 4: On the About Me page, scroll down to the Basics section. The data in the Basics section is required and cannot be removed from your Google Account. However, the data is editable.

Step 5: Click any arrow next to Name, Profile Picture, Gender, and Date of Birth in the Basic Info section to edit them.

Step 6: After editing, click the Back arrow to return to the About Me page.

Step 7: Scroll down to Contact, About or Jobs & Education section. The data in these sections is optional and may be removed from your Google Account.

Step 8: Click Add to provide new information under Contact, About or Jobs & Education section. To Delete previous information, click the arrows next to them.

How to choose personal information to make public on your Google account

Information like your name, date of birth, and gender is required to create a Google Account. Therefore. To make sure the information is only visible to you, here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Open the Google Account page in a web browser and sign in with your account details.

Step 2: On the left side of the new window, click Personal Information.

Step 3: Scroll down the page and click on the card that says ‘Choose what others see’. You will visit the About Me page with your Basics, Contacts, Jobs and Education.

Step 4: At the top of the About Me page, you’ll see two icons that represent information only you can see and information that anyone can see.

Step 5: Scroll down to the Basics section. Your Name and Profile Picture in this section are publicly viewable and you cannot change the settings. However, you can hide your Gender and Date of Birth by clicking the arrows next to them to update the settings.

Step 6: After editing, click the Back arrow to return to the About Me page.

Step 7: Scroll down to Contact, About or Jobs & Education section. The Gmail address associated with your account cannot be hidden. However, you can hide the secondary email address as your Work & Education information.

Step 8: Click the arrows next to Contact, About or Work & Education sections to change the display settings.

How to manage your profile across Google products and services

When you use certain Google products, you get a profile. Your profile on that product may be visible to others who use it. Therefore, to manage the personal information on that profile, you should do the following:

Step 1: Open the Google Account page in a web browser and sign in with your account details.

Step 2: On the left side of the new window, click Personal Information.

Step 3: Scroll down the page and click on the ‘Your Profile’ tab.

Step 4: On your Profile page, you will see profile summary with different products. Click the drop-down menu next to any product.

Step 5: Click ‘View Full Profile’ below the product to manage your personal information on it.

Manage Google account data

In addition to editing your personal information on your Google account and editing it for display, you can also edit or delete the type of data that Google stores about you. This information includes your web searches, app activity, and location history.
