Images with transparent backgrounds are quite flexible. You can use them as logos, combine them with various backgrounds, or even use them to create memes.
However. background is never transparent by default. You need to edit your images to get them, or you can create them from scratch. There are many software that you can use to make the background transparent. However, most of the good ones are not free.
Paint.net is a great open source image editing software that you can use for this purpose. Read on to learn how you can create a transparent background using Paint.net.
Create a transparent background with Paint.net
Now that you have downloaded and installed the software on your system, follow these simple steps to make the background transparent:
Step 1: Open the image of your choice in Paint.net. To do so, drag and drop the image file on the open window of Paint.net, or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+O to open it directly from wherever it is stored on your system.
Step 2: Then select the Magic Wand tool from the left toolbar. This tool allows you to easily select parts of an image with the same color with just one click.
Step 3: Using the Magic Wand tool, click on the image area you want to erase and a dotted line will circle part of the background, as you can see in the image below.
Step 4: Once you have enough choices, just tap Delete on your keyboard and the selected background will be removed from the image. It’s that simple.
Step 5: In case some background is left behind, you can repeat the process again. Just click on it with the Magic Wand tool and press Delete. The more uniform your background color is, the easier it will be to remove it with the tool.
Step 6: Now you should get a slightly rough image with a transparent background.
If you are satisfied with the result, you can save the image as it is. But if you want to clean it up a bit, continue the process.
Step 7: Enlarge the image with the Magnifying tool, then select the Eraser tool and adjust its size as per your requirement.
Step 8: Carefully erase all the irregularities from the edges little by little by moving the eraser around the edges and clicking on the parts you want to remove.
It’s quite a time consuming process, but it’s worth it. If you overcome the difficulty, the resulting image will look much better.
Step 9: After you are satisfied with the result, you can save the image with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S. Just make sure you save the file using the .png file format.
Saving the file as a .png is extremely important for this to work. If you save it as .jpeg, you will lose transparency.
Step 10: After you click Save, click OK in the next window and you are ready to go.
This method is especially effective if you are using images with a relatively simple background. However, if your image has a lot of things in the background then you will have to do some extra work to get the best results.
You can use the Tolerance slider on the top toolbar to adjust the selection of the Magic Wand tool and remove smaller elements from the background for the most accurate results.
You will get the most accurate small selections and you will need to reduce the tolerance little by little. After you erase most of the background and can’t do anything else with the Magic Wand tool, you’ll need to switch to the Eraser tool to perfect the image.
Zoom in on the canvas again, adjust the size of the eraser, and work around the background little by little. It will take some time, but it’s worth the effort. Save the image as a .png once you’re done and you’re done. You now have a photo with a transparent background.
