Who doesn’t love posters? I bet growing up we all have a poster or two of our teenage idol in our room (to our mother’s dismay). As exciting as it is, the whole process of poster hunting has its limits. For one, you can’t design your poster. Second, it’s a bit hard to find a movie that features two of your favorite superheroes together.
Thankfully, things have changed for the better in the past decade. Now you can not only choose your own superhero theme for your poster, but also design other elements.
So what are we waiting for? Let’s see how we can create custom superhero posters. But before we start, let’s take a quick look at what types of images you can and should download.
Which image to use? About IP and Copyright
Most of the user-generated content you see floating around the internet is the original and creative work of digital artists and is not intended for unauthorized commercial use. In fact, some artists even forbid others from reusing their work for layouts and posters without their express permission. After all, all these images are their creation.
Therefore, whenever you search for images for your poster, check the copyright terms. And even if it’s for your personal use, it’s always ideal to ask permission from the creator.
Now, going back to the places where you can select your images, here are some.
1. Find the image source
Here are some of our favorite sites to source royalty-free images.
1. Pixabay
Pixabay has an extensive collection of royalty free images. And if that wasn’t enough, you also have access to a range of cool illustrations and clipart. All you have to do is check the license and if it’s free to use you can download it with one click.
Sadly, when it comes to superheroes, Pixabay doesn’t have much, other than symbols and markings associated with mighty superheroes. But if you’re a fan of famous characters like Captain America, Iron Man, Superman or Batman, you won’t be disappointed.
However, the good thing is that there are a lot of appeals that you can creatively use to design a great poster.

2. Skip
Another site where you can check out royalty-free images is Unsplash. Similar to Pixabay, it contains loads of non-copyrighted images. The key to getting a perfect shot in Unsplash is search and patience. Yes, there are a lot of photos, but finding the right one will definitely take your time.
For instance, I found this interesting and creative Star Wars image when I searched for comics, not Star Wars. And if we have the same taste, I think it won’t be bad.
Again, let me reiterate that most of the images on Unsplash are actual images.
3. Deviant art
A superhero fan must already know about DeviantArt and its comprehensive library of images and wallpapers. While you do have to pay for some artwork, others are free to download as long as it’s for personal use. As long as you’re browsing on DeviantArt, keep an eye out for notices related to copyright.
You can search directly on Google using one of the search operators. Or, you can open DeviantArt and search directly. Once done, you can narrow down your choices to Wallpaper or Digital Art, from the filter on the left panel.

There are quite a few artists that I admire, such as Andy Romero (Blo0p) and rodolforever. If you like one of their digital prints, you’ll find a link to purchase the artwork at the bottom of the image (provided it’s a new painting).
4. Wallpaper website
If you’re making posters just for personal use (oops, did I say that again?), you might want to check out some wallpaper sites like Alpha Coders. They have some great creative images, whether it’s actual stills from movies or fan art.
2. Image editing
Once you’ve sourced your image, it’s time to polish it up. If you’re well versed with Adobe Photoshop, that’s fine and good. But if not, there are plenty of online tools that allow you to do that.
1. Photopea – Online photo editing
If you want to change the color tone of your photos, you can use some online photo editors like Photopea. This Photoshop-like image editing website comes with handy tools like Lasso, Select, and even Layers. And naturally, all these tools ease the image editing process.

You can also visit websites that remove backgrounds from images so you can add custom backgrounds with effects and elements.
2. Canva and Adobe Spark
However, Photopea can only take you so far. If you want some fresh artwork in your poster without importing a bunch of small files and effects, it’s best to rely on some design tool like Canva, Piktochart, or Adobe Spark.
For example, Canva has a fixed poster template. After you upload an image and place it on the template, you can use other photo assets like gradients, fun text, or small illustrations. The same goes for Adobe Spark and Piktochart.

There are many icons and other elements that you can explore. And if you’re in the mood, you can also explore some general creative images in the Images tab.
After you finish the poster, all you have to do is export it to your PC. Or, if you want some high-quality prints, you can also order them online.
If you are going to order high quality prints, make sure you are working with high resolution images.
3. Additional tips for online printing
Now that the soft copy of the poster is ready, all you need to do is print it out and stick it on your wall. If you have a printer that can do the job, that’s great. If not, you can outsource one of the online services that can print and send a copy to our location.
As we mentioned above, Canva is where you can create and order your prints.
Vistaprint is another website that allows you to order prints easily. The best part is that the site offers several options for printing. Whether it’s a glossy print or a print with a horizontal layout, you can play with a lot.

You can also try HP’s Photo Creations. While it is mainly used to create picture books and the like, you can use this software to order posters if you are in the US.
Unleash your creativity
So that’s how you can create superhero posters. I understand that the process is a bit complicated when you compare it to walking to the store and buying a copy. But let me tell you that what you will do will be unique.
More importantly, it will be your creation, according to your taste and liking. So there is no compromise there.
