How to Install, Run Windows 10 Modern Apps on External Drive

In Windows 8/8.1, Microsoft doesn’t provide enough control over Modern apps. You cannot move your modern applications from one partition to another. However, now in Windows 10, you can. In fact, you can install and run modern Windows 10 apps from an external drive. Well, doing so will save you some precious storage space if you’re running low. So let’s see how you can do that.

Install and run Windows 10 modern apps from an external drive

Here in this tutorial, I used a Flash drive as an external drive. You can use a portable hard drive or even a DVD if you want. Well, let’s start by going into the settings. Press Windows Key + Me to quickly open Windows 10 settings. In the settings menu, click System setting.

Next, in System Settings, select Warehouse. You can also directly search Warehouse in the search option available in the top right corner. Microsoft did a great job in organizing the settings

Next, in the storage settings, scroll down Save location. Here you will have the option to set where you want to save/install modern apps. Along with that, you can also change where your photos and videos are saved.

Below The new app will save to:, drop-down menu. Don’t forget to plug in your external drive before getting to this section. Here you will have the option to select the external drive as the installation location for Modern Apps.

Set the save location for the app

Select the detected external drive. Once selected, you will receive a Apply button. Click it to apply the settings.

Now, whenever you install an application, that application will be installed in that particular external drive.

Note: External drive must be connected to run installed applications. If you open the application without connecting the external drive, you will get the following error.

As soon as you insert the external drive, the application opens.

Next, we will see how you can move installed applications to an external drive.

Go Settings > System > Apps and Features. Here you can manage your installed apps and also uninstall them. But, along with Uninstall button you get Move button. When you select any app, you will get options.

Note: You can only migrate third-party Windows 10 Modern apps. Built-in Microsoft apps or Universal apps cannot be moved or modified.

Next, click move and you will have the option to select your external drive.

After selecting your drive, it will start migrating applications. You will get the following folders in your external drive.

Note: Do not change folder locations or create root folders for all these folders. In addition, you will need read rights to access some folders.

You can easily manage the applications that you have just installed on the external drive. inside Apps and features settings, at the top you have options to see the apps installed on different drives. Select the external drive and it will show you a list of installed applications.
