Jide’s Remix OS has gained a lot of hype over the past two months. Its Remix Mini was a hit on Kickstarter and was also shown off at CES 2016. Remix OS delivered a desktop-style Android experience. It can be easily tried out by booting via USB and can also be dual-booted with your current operating system. Dual booting can be a tedious task, and to boot from a flash drive you need at least 32 GB of free space. Well, if none of that works for you then you can install it on a Virtual Machine and run it that way whenever you want.
Remix OS + Virtual Box = Awesome
We will be using Virtual Box as the VM software. I installed it here on my Windows 10 PC. Virtual Box is available on most platforms, by the way. Therefore, this guide can also be applied to Mac and Linux OS’. So let’s see how to install Remix OS on Virtual Box. Before that, please read the prerequisites below.
Prerequisites
You must have Virtual Box installed. Alternatively, download Remix OS from Jide’s website if you haven’t already. There are two options available- Legacy and EFI. Download Heritage document. Torrent links are highly recommended. When downloading directly, the server may not respond. Now, some minimum requirements to run Remix OS on Virtual Box.
You must have at least 4 GB of RAM to be able to allocate at least 1 GB of RAM to Remix OS. The higher the RAM, the better it will perform. Here I used 2 GB RAM out of 8 GB. 16 GB of storage is required for the virtual hard drive. Most Important – At least a dual core processor. (Well, most systems these days have dual cores or higher). Higher processing speed, better performance. Also, if your processor supports hyperthreading then you will run this operating system smoothly.
Now that you’re all set, let’s get started with creating a virtual machine for the Remix operating system.
Create a virtual machine for Remix OS
Step 1: Click New in the menu option at the top to create a new virtual machine, from the VirtualBox VM.
Step 2: Now select the options as shown in the screenshot below. You can give it any name you want. Here we are using Linux because Android is based on Linux. Also, be sure to choose the 64-bit version. Remix is a 64-bit operating system. Click Next.
Step 3: On the next screen allocate memory. Allocate at least 1 GB if you have low RAM.
Step 4: Select Create a new virtual dard now.
Step 5: Select VDI as your hard disk file type.
Step 6: Next, select dynamic allocation.
Step 7: Allocate at least 16 GB of storage. Alternatively, choose the location of your virtual hard drive. Here I didn’t keep it on my system drive (default folder). You can put another logical drive if you don’t have enough storage space on the system partition. Finally, click Create.
Not enough space in your system partition? You may want to extend it. Here is a quick guide to easily extend the system partition on Windows 10.
You have now created the virtual machine. Next, we will install the Remix OS ISO file.
Run the Remix OS ISO file
Now, extract the files from the Remix OS zip file you downloaded. we don’t need remix-usb-tool.exe. Only ISO files will be used here. Now start the virtual machine. Right click and select WILLtart -> Normal start.
The virtual machine will start. Now, you will get a dialog to select the ISO file. Browse and select the ISO file. And click Begin.
Remix OS will start to boot. Now Remix OS works in two modes – permanent residency And guest mode. Resident mode doesn’t seem to work. So choose guest mode. Use arrow keys to go up and down and Navigation key to select. Now, after selecting guest mode, you will have to enter a small code.
vga=791
That means the system will boot at 1024*768 resolution with 65000 colors. No weight. Also, don’t forget to add a space before you type vga=791 as shown in the screenshot below.
Now, your system will boot. It may take some time. Patient. This is the main screen of Remix OS. If the system is visually slow, increase Video Memory of the virtual machine.
What do you think about Remix OS?
So what do you think about this operating system? Does it really give you a desktop-style experience? I can open all apps fluently. A big thumbs up for Jide for that. Let us know what you think about Remix OS in the comments.
