Quite often, you have to use Google Docs to create a rich document and want to insert a chart or diagram into it. Typically, you create one in Paint 3D or similar software and then paste it as an image in the document. Google Drawings now allows you to create such flowcharts or diagrams and insert them directly into Google Docs.
If you choose the latter, I’m sure you’ll be able to create a flowchart in no time, but you might run into some problems when inserting it into your document. Well, there are two different ways that you can do it and that is what I will talk about in this article. So without further ado, let’s see how you can insert Google Drawings into your Google Docs:
How to insert Google Drawings into Google Docs
Before adding a Drawing, you need to create a Drawing inside a Google Doc.
Create your drawings in Google Docs
So you have to create your drawing right in Google Docs as the first stage to eliminate any import/export hassle. That will also remove the need to copy it from another platform. To do so, simply follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Click Insert in the top toolbar in your Google Docs.
Step 2: Hover your cursor over the Drawing option to open the next drop-down menu.
Step 3: Click New in the menu to open a new Google Drawings Canvas.
Step 4: Create your drawing and then hit the Save and Close button in the top right corner.
Your drawing will now be added to the document. If you want to resize the artboard, you can do that by selecting it, moving the cursor to any corner, and then clicking and dragging it to resize it.
When you select the drawing, you’ll also have the option to change how you want it to appear in your document. You can put it inline, wrap the text around it, or wrap the text for the drawing. Pretty simple, right?
Copy and insert your drawing
Now, if you created your illustration in Google Drawings, then you will have to insert it into the document using another method. To do so, simply follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Click Insert in the top toolbar in your Google Docs.
Step 2: Hover your cursor over the Drawing option to open the next drop-down menu.
Step 3: Then click From Drive in the menu.
Step 4: In the following pop-up, select the Google Drawing that you want to insert in your document and press Select.
Step 5: Choose whether you want to keep the drawing linked to the original or if you want to unlink it.
Your drawing will now be added to the document. If you choose to keep the linked drawing, you’ll be able to edit the original and easily update the drawing in your document with a single click.
Here’s how you can do it:
Step 1: Update the original drawing and wait for the drawing to save on your Google Drive.
Step 2: Access the document in Google Docs and select the drawing.
Step 3: Click the Update New button in the top right corner of the drawing to include the changes you just made.
Simple isn’t it? Now, if you want to unlink the original to prevent any accidental changes from being added to the document, you can click the new link button in the top right corner, then select Unlink from the browser. drop-down menu.
From the same menu, you can also open the original drawing if you want to quickly make any other changes by clicking the Open Source button.
How to Insert Google Drawings into Google Slides (Extra Tip)
So, if you are also creating a presentation using Google Slides and want to include the same drawing in it, you will notice that you cannot do it using the methods mentioned above. To do so, you need to instead follow these steps:
Step 1: Click File on the top toolbar in your Google Drawing.
Step 2: Select the ‘Publish to the web’ option from the drop-down menu.
Step 3: In the following pop-up, select the image size you want and then click the Publish button.
Step 4: Click OK in the following prompt to publish your drawing to the web.
Step 5: Copy the newly created link from within the popup.
Step 6: Now switch to your presentation in Google Slides and click Insert on the top toolbar.
Step 7: Hover your cursor over the Image option and then select By URL from the next drop-down menu.
Step 8: Paste the URL you just copied into the space provided and press Insert.
Your photo from Google Drawings will now appear on the slide. You can then resize the image the same way you did on Google Docs.
