How to Hide Certain Running Applications on Your Mac

Back in the early days of the Mac, OS X used to have a built-in feature that let you focus on a single window while hiding all other windows. For whatever reason, Apple decided to get rid of that. Therefore, it is also now difficult to hide all your open windows to protect from eyes wandering nearby.

Luckily, a new Mac app called Hides has restored these features. The app allows you to use your Mac in “Single App Mode” and quickly hide all your windows with a single click or keyboard shortcut. Hides costs $4.99 in the Mac App Store but is well worth it if you’re often in a busy environment but need to do some private browsing.

Hide your entire screen

If you want to hide your entire screen with Hides, use the Options panel that opens when you launch the app for the first time. You can decide if you want to hide all running apps or just use Single App Mode. For our purposes, make sure Single application mode in the left sidebar is disabled.

Although Hide is in your menu bar for easy access, you may want to set a keyboard shortcut to hide windows even faster. Select Hide all apps in Preferences to do this. Then tap Record Shortcuts and choose your key combination to set up.

From there, click Hide in the menu bar and select Hide all apps or just use your shortcut. All your windows will click disappear from the desktop.

Hide individual apps

To hide individual apps on your Mac, you’ll want to go back to the Hide preferences, accessible via menu bar preferences. This time, click the switch on the left to turn it on Single application mode.

Single App mode basically only lets you use one app at a time and it automatically hides the rest. If you have Safari, Messages, Calendar, and Mail open and Single-App Mode turned on, you’ll only be able to see one of the four apps you choose. If you decide you just want to see Safari but then try to open Messages, the Messages window opens and Safari automatically minimizes.

This is a great tool if you need to focus on a specific app and don’t want the distracting clutter behind it on your screen. Hide lets you choose a shortcut to enable Single App Mode, so take advantage of that if you want quick access.
