Bots are everywhere on the internet. They chat with you as a customer service rep, they respond to your comments on Reddit and even directly on your smartphone as your personal assistant and also Siri and Cortana. These software bots are designed to perform automated tasks and repetitive tasks. As in the case of Siri, they can collect information from all over the web and your phone and present it to you.
Taming robots before they tame you | shutter
Today we are going to look at one such bot that can get information from Wikipedia and do other things, all through Whatsapp.
Disclaimer: Wikipedia does not have any official bots and the bot being used here is by Duta, which aggregates content from the web, based on your query. Even though they claim they don’t spam you (in my experience they don’t), the way this works means they can see your cell phone number. So use at your discretion before proceeding.
Set up Bot
Let’s see how to set up the bot.
Step 1: First of all, go to their website and save the number provided there in your contacts with a suitable name. In case the first number doesn’t work, you can get a backup number from here.
Step 2: Next, you will need to create a group with the bot as it does not respond to live chat. You can be the only participant in the group and can also add other friends and contacts. The bot will reply to all the participants in the group. Next, we will look at the commands that can be given.
Step 3: There are more than 20 commands that can be issued but the important ones, which are not country specific, are as follows:
If the bot doesn’t reply even after receiving your message (like someone you like), check their website to see if they changed the number.
Telegram – Better Platform for Bots
Whatsapp doesn’t like bots, to the point that it violates their terms & conditions if you create bots for their platform. They have disabled many such bots in the past. On the other hand, Telegram clearly supports and loves bots. They have a bot store where you can choose bots to your liking. Also, no setup required, download the Telegram app, sign up with your number and then add the bots you like from here.

It also has Wikipedia Bot but it doesn’t work like Whatsapp, only fetches links instead of content.
Bots can be idiots sometimes
The bot is really cool, great at helping us and being our personal assistant. But so far they have not reached the level of moral and emotional sophistication. And we have the latest example of a bot that failed miserably, Tay, a bot developed by Microsoft with a teenage mind. Within hours of it being rolled out on Twitter, it started playing Nazi propaganda, and Microsoft had to shut it down before it ventured into other dark territories.
