How to Link Smartphones to Create Surround Sound

At one point or another, we’ve all tried various hacks to get louder sound out of our phone or tablet’s speakers. The glass or bowl trick always works and gives you louder sound when you don’t have a portable speaker with you. But what if I told you you could hook up phones around you and use the speaker to play the same song? Sounds pretty interesting, I know.

Amps

Something very similar to the Samsung team game we saw years ago. However, the new app called AmpMe that we are about to introduce today works on both Android and iOS and therefore invites almost any smartphone user to join the party. So let’s test the app and see how it works.

Note: Before we dive in, I want to make one thing clear. The app doesn’t play music locally and only supports SoundCloud at the moment. Developers are working to add more cloud streaming services like Google Music and Spotify. But there is no scheduled date for it.

Set up AmpMe on your smartphone

After you install and launch the AmpMe app, it will give you the option to join a party or host a new one. So basically, one of the devices will have to host the party and will act as a host for all the participating phones later on. The app will ask you to connect your SoundCloud account or create one if you don’t already have one. It.

Once that’s done, the app will show you all the tracks you’ve uploaded to SoundCloud. If you have any music in there, just go ahead and play them. However, if you’re not a SoundCloud user, you can search for tracks and playlists, and trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Once the songs start playing on your device, you’ll have the option to invite others to the party. Tapping it will give you a 4-digit invitation code specific to your phone. Keep it in a convenient place as it needs to be added to the phone where you want to sync the speakers.

Invite others to the party

Assuming that AmpMe is installed and running on the second phone, tap the option Join the party. On the screen, enter the 4-digit code and wait for the phone to sync. The app uses the stream from the parent phone along with the second phone’s microphone to synchronize them.

Once the phone is synced, both speakers will play songs. The phone on which you are hosting the party will be the controller and all other phones will only act as the speaker. Any changes to tracks and playlists need to be made from the controller.

Still… A lot of work needed

One thing I like about this app is that it works on both Android and iOS. The interface on both platforms is similar, so one does not feel lost. But what concerns me is quality. Just because some small speakers play in sync doesn’t mean you’ll get better sound.

Therefore, my recommendation is to play the phone at a volume lower than maximum. The app also recommends something called a per-device volume hottie.

The next thing that interests me is the sync and it’s almost perfect. But a fraction of a second’s delay can make setup a complete waste. As such, the developers have to work on perfect sync along with adding some extra music streaming services if they want to make AmpMe a success.
