While you don’t need to, the biggest motivation to root your phone is of course flashing a custom ROM. This could be CyanogenMod or just the original AOSP ROM for your device. Of course, in this day and age, custom ROMs are not really necessary. If you’ve rocked a phone that’s pre-existing or close to stock Android, there are some amazing things you can do with Xposed. It brings ROM-like features and more to your rooted stock ROM.

This guide assumes that your phone is rooted and that you have TWRP recovery installed. Also, fully charge your phone before starting this process. You also need to download the custom ROM and Google apps zip file first to your phone’s internal storage. Since you are rooted this process will not wipe your entire internal storage. Your personal files are safe.
1. Backup data with Titanium Backup
Now that you’re rooted and you basically have full control over all the data in the OS, there’s no reason not to back up the important stuff. With Titanium Backup you can backup not only apps but also app data as well as system data like SMS, contacts, etc.
Download the app for free, give it Super User access and tap the icon Tick button for batch options. From Support part touching either Back up all user apps, Backup all system data or Backup all user apps + system data. It’s best to go with the last option. When it comes to system app preferences, you can uncheck anything you don’t want to back up. Or you can backup everything, then pick and choose what to restore.
Another option, if you don’t want to mess with system data when switching to a brand new ROM, is to back up user data and apps. You can individually back up your SMS and call logs’ and other items using Titanium backup or any other backup application.
2. Backup Nandroid via TWRP
Now that the apps are backed up, it’s time to boot into recovery. You can do it by turning off the phone and then restarting it by holding the Power + Volume Down keys. This may vary between devices. But hey, if you’re rooted, you know how to restore.
Performing a Nandroid backup through restore is very important. If something goes wrong while flashing a new ROM, restore this backup (via Restore optional), will return your entire phone to the exact state it was in when you backed it up.
Now that you’re here, tap Supportdon’t change any options from the top and just swipe where the notification is Swipe to backup. When you’re done, tap Home page to return to the TWRP main screen.
3. Erase current ROM (Factory Reset)
Next, we need to erase the entire current ROM and any related data that might interfere with the new ROM. Touch Wipe it off button. Now, by default, TWRP has Restore factory settings option that we will choose. No need to go in Advanced Erase or whatever.
Just swipe where it says Swipe to Factory Reset and when that’s done, go back to the main screen.
Erase will not erase Internal Storage: Erase will only erase system data. All your media, files and backups will be safe.
4. Flash New ROMs and Google Apps
Now it’s time to actually flash the new ROM you downloaded and transferred to your Android phone, along with the Google apps (yes, you need to flash them separately).
Clap Settingfind the ROM file, tap it and swipe to where it’s written Swipe to confirm Flash. Now, TWRP allows you to create flash queues. You can add Google apps by tapping More zippers and flash both one after the other.
But I prefer to flash both individually. I’m old fashioned like that (I grew up with ClockworkMod recovery).
5. Clear cache and reboot
Now that the new ROM has been flashed, the best way is to wipe cache and dalvik cache. The good thing about TWRP is that it will give you the option to Clear cache/dalvik after you have finished a flash. Tap the button and swipe where it says Swipe to delete.
It’s done. Now it’s time to exit the recovery process. To do that, tap Home page to get to the TWRP home screen, press restart and then select System.
New ROM smell
Since this is a fresh install, the first boot may take a few minutes. After that, the setup process will be like getting a new phone. Once done, go to the Play Store and download Titanium Backup first. Go to batch options and restore all the apps and system data you want.
And just like that, you will rock the apps just like with the final ROM. In addition, you also do not lose any important data. That’s the way to do it.
