How to Fix YouTube Chapters / Timestamps Not Working

Are video chapters or timestamps not working or not showing in your videos?

Video Chapters break up a video into sections with individual previews.

When you add timestamps in the description of your video, they should show up in the video.

In some cases, video chapters will not show up in your video even though you’ve added the timestamps correctly.

Editor’s note: I’ve faced this issue myself on my own YouTube channel and I managed to fix it.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to fix YouTube chapters or timestamps not working or not showing in your videos.

How to Fix YouTube Chapters / Timestamps Not Working

To fix YouTube chapters or timestamps not working, you need to ensure that your first timestamp starts with 00:00, have at least 3 timestamps, and the length of each chapter is at least 10 seconds.

If you’ve met all the requirements but the issue is not fixed, you need to wait for 72 hours or contact YouTube support.

Fix 1: Meet these requirements

YouTube Chapters Not Working

  • The first timestamp needs to start with 00:00 or 0:00.
  • Your video has at least 3 timestamps listed in ascending order.
  • The length of each video chapter is at least 10 seconds.
  • The language of the chapters matches your language.
  • Your channel must not have any active strikes.
  • Your video must not be inappropriate to some viewers.

Editor’s note: If you’ve met all of the requirements above but chapters are still not showing up, I recommend following the other fixes below.

Fix 2: Wait for up to 72 hours

to confirm, did you recently add the video chapters? if so, we recommend waiting for 72 hours for the timestamps to process

— TeamYouTube (@TeamYouTube) March 13, 2024

  • Timestamps can take a while to process before you can see the chapter breaks on the progress bar of your video.
  • According to YouTube, if you’ve recently added chapters to your video, you need to wait for 72 hours for timestamps to show up.

Editor’s note: You don’t need 1,000 subscribers for video chapters to work—it can also work on a new channel—but you need to wait for it to be processed.

Fix 3: Contact YouTube using the feedback form

  1. Go to https://studio.youtube.com/ and log in to your YouTube account.
  2. Select “Send feedback” on the left sidebar.
  3. Allow cookies on the page.
  4. Describe your issue (e.g. Video chapters are not working).
  5. Send the feedback and wait for 24 hours.

Editor’s note: After I sent the feedback, the video chapters on my video finally showed up the next day.
