Microsoft has revealed Windows 11 and is expected to launch in the fall of 2021. The biggest question is whether you can install or upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 10 to Windows 11. Fortunately, Microsoft has released the PC Health Check application to check and notify if your computer can run Windows 11 or not. However, many users are getting an error when running an application that says ‘This PC can’t run Windows 11’ on systems that are only a few years old.
Windows 11 brings hundreds of notable features including key ones like support for Android apps, the quick layouts that are always available in PowerToys (like Fancy Zones), and a few other changes.
Additionally, Microsoft has outlined feature-specific requirements so that you can test and verify that your computer meets those requirements to run them. For instance, DirectStorage only works with NVMe SSDs, and Auto HDR requires you to have an HDR display to get the best out of it.
While you’d love to try the new Windows 11, you need to find out and confirm if it’s running on your computer. To do that, first download the PC Health Check app.
Let’s find out why the PC Health Check application is causing that error and how you can fix it.
Requires Windows 11
While Windows 11 will be available as a free upgrade to existing Windows users, it comes with a list of basic hardware requirements.
- 1 Gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on Chip (SoC)
- Minimum RAM 4GB
- 64GB minimum storage space
- Secure Boot and UEFI
- TPM 2.0
- DirectX 12 / WDDM 2.x . compatible graphics card
- Screen must be >9″ with HD resolution (720p)
- Microsoft account and active internet connection
The PC Health Check application may give an error when one or more requirements are not met.

Two of the most common reasons why the PC Health Check app says your PC can’t run Windows 11 is because of TPM 2.0 and the Secure Boot features.
Most computers sold after 2016 will have a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) for Intel and AMD platforms. However, TPM is not enabled by default in some desktop computers and laptops.
Otherwise, you always have the option to use or disable Secure Boot from UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) on your computer.
What is TPM and Secure Boot
TPM or Trusted Platform Module is a cryptocurrency processor or microchip installed to provide hardware-level security. By default, most recently available motherboards have a TPM chip built in, and slightly older motherboards have a TPM connector pin to add their own module.
The job of the TPM chip is to encrypt the data transmitted from and to the computer. During this process, this module ensures that no unauthorized changes are made without the administrator’s consent. Important data such as keys, passwords, and certificates are stored in the TPM chip in a secure and isolated manner.
Enable TPM and secure boot of your computer
Before we begin, save all your work as you will have to restart your computer. There are several ways to get to the UEFI screen but we recommend doing it from Windows Settings.
The UEFI screen you see on your computer may be slightly different from the one you see here, and that’s okay.
Most importantly, you are looking for Security and Boot settings in UEFI. That’s where you’ll find TPM and Secure Boot options if your Windows computer has them.
Note: Intel-based UEFIs refer to TPM as TPM, while AMD platforms refer to the option as fTPM (Firmware-Based Trusted Platform Module).
Depending on the desktop or laptop manufacturer, the UEFI view may vary. However, you will find basic instructions such as using the arrow keys to select in it. Still check them on your UEFI menu at the bottom of the screen. If you are unsure about the changes you have made, you can exit the BIOS and make sure not to save any changes before restarting the computer.
Once you make your way to the UEFI settings, look for TPM in the Security preferences.
Step 1: Navigate to the Security tab where you will find the TPM at the bottom of the list. If Current TPM Status is set to Installed it means you have TPM on your Windows computer. Scroll to Change TPM status and change the value to Enabled.
Note: On certain motherboards or laptops, the TPM will be set to Discrete. You need to change it to Firmware and save the change.
Step 2: Now go to the Startup tab and make sure Secure Boot is set to Enabled.
Step 3: Now you have to Save the changes you made and Exit UEFI mode. By default, F10 is the key to save the changes and exit the mode. When asked to save changes, select Yes to save and exit. Your computer will automatically restart.
When you see the desktop, run the PC Health Check app again and this is what it looks like.
Prepare
After confirming if your computer can run Windows 11, you should be ready to install it. Microsoft aims to release the Windows 11 beta build to Windows Insiders from June 28, 2021. And the public release of Windows 11 will be out this holiday season. The good thing is that existing Windows 10 users will be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 11.
