I use Gboard on my Android smartphone because it is one of the best keyboard apps for the platform. It comes with lots of features like in-app integration with Google Search, Maps, and translations, all in Gboard.
However, many users have encountered problems using the microphone. Voice input for typing with Gboard doesn’t work for them.
That can be frustrating, especially when you need to send a quick message. Using the microphone in such situations can save time. Without further ado, here are some solutions to the microphone not working for Gboard issue.
Let’s get started.
1. Enable Voice Input
Before you can use voice to enter text through the Gboard app, you’ll need to enable it in the settings first. If it is already on, try turning it off and on again once. That can solve the problem easily.
To do so, tap the Google icon and select the menu icon.
Tap Settings and go to Preferences here.
Tap the Voice Input key to enable this option. If it is already on, turn it off and on again once. Check if you can type text with your voice now. You’ll see a microphone icon in the upper right of the keyboard.
Tap it once to see audiovisual cues and start speaking clearly.
2. Voice language pack
Gboard supports several language packs, and if you’re speaking in a language that hasn’t been downloaded and selected, Gboard’s microphone won’t work. To check, reopen Settings as you did in the previous step and select Voice Input and then Language.
You will see a new popup where you can scroll and choose your preferred language.
You can select multiple languages here, and the Gboard microphone will recognize them all. Useful when you are often on the go and need to text in multiple languages. Check if the Gboard microphone is working.
3. Enable Google Search
It’s an odd solution, but some users have stated that enabling Google Search in Gboard helped them solve the problem of Gboard microphone not working. I guess it’s a Google product after all. Also, it’s a handy feature.
Go to Settings and tap Search. Here, you will activate the Show “Search and more” button.
Go back and launch Gboard. You’ll see a G button if it’s not already visible.
Is the microphone working now?
4. App permissions
It’s also possible that Gboard or the microphone lacks the proper permissions to receive voice input. Open the Android Settings app and tap on Installed apps or where you can find a list of all the apps installed on your phone. Find Gboard here and open it.
Tap App Permissions and enable Microphone here if not.
Note that at this point you will have to retrain the Google Now installation. I recommend doing it even if you are not prompted to do it. You’ll find how to retrain the Google Assistant to recognize your voice in point 6 of this tutorial. Go over the other points as they might be helpful.
5. Turn off the virtual keyboard
But my phone already has a virtual keyboard, is that Gboard? Android smartphones can also connect to a physical Bluetooth keyboard. In that case, you will need to enable the virtual keyboard option. If it’s on and you’re not using a physical keyboard, it can damage Gboard. To disable the virtual keyboard, open Settings and under Additional Settings find Language & input.
Tap on Physical Keyboard and turn off Show Virtual Keyboard option.
In the same screen, tap On-Screen Keyboard and enable Google voice typing if not enabled automatically.
Check if the microphone is working again on Gboard.
6. Energy saving mode
Power saving mode is there for a reason. It increases the battery life of your smartphone by checking for battery-hungry apps that are consuming too much battery for no reason at all. To check, open Settings and tap Battery & performance then search for the Gboard app.
Open Gboard and see if Restrict background activity is checked. Preferably, it should be Battery Saver but if that doesn’t work for you, switch to Unlimited here.
GBoard is the new keyboard
Gboard is one of the best keyboards for Android smartphones. It’s a pity that it doesn’t work as it should, especially when you need it. While microphone issues are not a big deal for most users, not everyone uses voice input and it can still be frustrating for those who do.
One of the above solutions should help solve the problem. It is not recommended to resort to extreme measures like uninstalling or doing a factory reset of the phone.
