Instagram direct messages are not working because Instagram is down.
Otherwise, you’ve sent too many direct messages in one go and you’re temporarily blocked from doing so.
Reasons why your Instagram direct messages aren’t working:
- Instagram is down (check Instagram’s status on downdetector.com/status/instagram).
- You sent too many direct messages in one go (you will be temporarily blocked from sending direct messages).
Author’s Note: I’ve been temporarily blocked from sending direct messages many times in the past, and the ban usually lifts in 1 to 3 hours.
There are two ways to check if Instagram is down—go to downdetector.com/status/instagram or Twitter.
On Downdetector, the spike graph says Instagram is down.
On Twitter, search for the issue you’re having (e.g. Instagram DM not working) and check for the latest tweets.
If a lot of people tweet about it, it means Instagram DM might not work.
If Instagram DM is down, you need to wait 24 hours for the feature to work again.
How to fix Instagram DM not working
To fix Instagram DM (direct message) not working, you need to wait for 24 hours (if Instagram is down).
If Instagram doesn’t stop working, you can try using the web version of Instagram (instagram.com).
You can also try switching your network or reporting the problem on the app.
Finally, you can try updating Instagram or uninstalling and then reinstalling.
Method 1: Wait 24 hours
- Check if Instagram is down on downdetector.com/status/instagram—if so, you’ll need to wait 24 hours or more for DM to work again.
- If you’ve sent too many direct messages, you’ll be temporarily blocked from doing this, and you’ll have to wait a few hours to use the feature again.
Fix 2: Use Instagram Web
- If Instagram DM is not working, you can try using the web version of Instagram to view or send messages.
- Method 1: Go to instagram.com on PC > Sign In > DM > Send Message.
- Method 2: Download Instagram from Microsoft Store > Sign In > DM > Send Message.
Fix 3: Switch your network
- If you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network, switch to mobile data.
- If you’re connected to mobile data, switch to a Wi-Fi network.
- You can also try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network (preferably faster one).
Fix 4: Report a problem
- Navigate to your Instagram profile and tap the menu icon.
- Settings > Help > Report a problem.
- Report an issue > Include and continue.
- Describe your problem and submit a report.
Note: If you have enabled “Shake phone to report problems”, open your DM, shake your phone and report the problem there.
Fix 5: Uninstall and reinstall Instagram
- Uninstall and reinstall Instagram: Uninstall Instagram app > open App Store/Google Play Store > search for “Instagram” > reinstall.
- Update Instagram: Open the App Store/Google Play Store > search for “Instagram” > tap the “Update” button.
