Video conferencing applications rank high in work-from-home solutions and have experienced explosive growth in recent times. For casual as well as professional video calls, such apps are a boon. One such application is Houseparty, which allows users to not only talk to each other, but also play interesting games at the same time. The only problem is that the Houseparty app doesn’t work or doesn’t even load for some users.
The app is available on both iOS and Android and also has a web version. See what we can do to help resolve this situation so you can get back to making jokes and playing games over video calls in Houseparty.
1. Application/server side error
The recent increase in the number of users has caused all kinds of problems. Houseparty shared a recent update say they are facing ‘some problems’ without giving too specific reasons. I recommend checking their Twitter account for the official announcement.
You should also check Downdetector to see if there is any server downtime or some other issue where you live. It’s a useful website that tracks the most popular apps and services for downtime. Check area maps and graphs for more details.
2. Access and Permissions
Houseparty app loads fine but still not working correctly? One reason could be lack of proper permissions like access to camera, microphone and gallery. Let’s start with the browser. Go to the camera in Settings or copy-paste this into a new tab.
chrome://settings/content/camera
Check if Houseparty is listed on the Block List and if so, remove the list. Now repeat the same process for the microphone, you can find it at the link mentioned below.
chrome://settings/content/microphone
And do it for notifications too. You can search for the item if the list is too long.
chrome://settings/content/notifications
Relaunch the web application. This time, make sure you allow access to the webcam and microphone when asked, among other things.
On an Android phone, go to Settings > Apps > Manage Applications > Houseparty and open App Permissions. Make sure it has access to contacts, camera, and everything else. Otherwise, Houseparty will not function properly.
For iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Houseparty and grant the necessary permissions.
Note: Most people save their contacts on their smartphones. If you haven’t given Houseparty access to the contacts there, it won’t show up on the web app (browser either). That’s why you might be wondering that even though the web app is working properly, why can’t I see my contacts. You can’t because you need to sync them from your phone first.
3. Number of devices
Houseparty says that regardless of whether you have a pretty face or not, you can only party on one device at a time.
Close all other instances of the Houseparty app under your username and select a device. Choose your party location. That’s another reason Houseparty isn’t right for you.
4. Old cache, corrupted data
Old cache or corrupted application files can be the cause of Houseparty not working error. Again, I’ll start with the browser.
Options and locations may vary depending on the browser you are using. Go to Settings and find the option to Clear browsing data under Privacy and security. You need to clear cookies and cache files. Note that doing so will log you out of all sites, not just Houseparty. Save everything before moving forward.
Android users will open Settings > Manage Applications > Apps > Houseparty and tap Clear Data at the bottom of the screen. You can delete both the data file and the cache from there. That will require you to log back into the Houseparty app. Check if the app works then.
5. Reinstall
I recommend repeating the steps in the above point before uninstalling Houseparty and reinstalling. There are two benefits you will get. One is that you will automatically use the latest version of the app to fix any known bugs and errors. The second is that if you don’t clear the cache and other old data files, they can continue to interfere with the way the app works. And you definitely don’t want that. Always do a clean install when reinstalling an app regardless of platform.
Housewarming
Houseparty is a new app that launched around last year and then Epic Games acquired it. So I guess you can trust Houseparty about your contacts and webcam access. However, your privacy is in your hands and you can never be too cautious.
Don’t forget to dress up for the party before connecting with friends and family members. And continue to wash your hands, especially before eating, even if you haven’t been out recently. That’s a good habit to follow.
If you are using another app for video conferencing or playing/connecting with friends, do share with us in the comments below.
