How to Fix Google Photos Not Backing up Videos on Android and iPhone

Google Photos is a free cloud storage service, loved by many for its simple interface and usage. In addition to acting as a gallery app, Google Photos basically has one job — backing up your photos and videos to the cloud.

Restart the phone

Follow these steps to turn off backup on Android and iPhone:

Step 1: Open the Google Photos app and tap the three-bar icon at the top. From the menu, select Settings.

Step 2: Tap Backup & sync and tap the switch next to Backup & sync to turn it off.

Step 3: Restart the phone and do the above steps again. Now enable Backup and sync.

Enable video backup on mobile data

On iPhone, video backup on cellular data is disabled by default. So if you’re trying to backup your videos with mobile data, it won’t work. You need to enable the setting.

Step 1: Open phone Settings and go to Applications/Application Manager.

Step 2: In All Apps, tap Google Photos.

Step 3: Tap on Storage and press the Clear Cache button.

Step 4: Restart your phone and see if the video is uploading.

If the problem persists, tap Clear storage/data in step 3. Neither of these options will delete any data from your phone or Google Photos. However, clearing data will reset app settings to defaults.

Uninstall apps

Sometimes it’s also helpful to uninstall apps. To do so on iPhone, press and hold the Google Photos app icon on the home screen. When the icons start to vibrate, tap the cross icon on the Google Photos app.

Since Google Photos is a pre-installed app on most Android phones, it cannot be uninstalled. However, you can disable it, which will remove all updates.

Turn off the app

Check Google Drive storage

Google Photos offers two storage options — high quality and original quality. In high quality mode, you can upload unlimited photos and videos. However, the size will drop to a maximum of 16MP for photos and 1080p for videos.

With original quality, you only get 15GB of storage that is shared among other Google products like Drive, Gmail, etc. If you are using native quality, check that you have enough space. to upload videos to Google or not.

To change the quality mode, go to Google Photos Settings > Backup & sync > Upload Size.

Are you trying to make a backup of a video that is available in a different folder than the camera folder? In the case of Android phones, only images and videos captured through the phone’s camera are backed up automatically.
