How to fix ‘Compiling Shaders’ not loading in Dragon’s Dogma 2

You may be one of the many who are launching Dragon’s Dogma 2 only to find a ‘Compiling Shading’ screen that never loads and remains stuck. I was unfortunate enough to deal with this myself, but luckily there are a few simple solutions to fix the problem.

If you want to start actually playing the game and not keep looking at the same screen, here’s how to fix the ‘Compiling Shaders’ error for Dragon’s Dogma.

How to fix ‘Compiling Shaders’ not loading bug

There are a few solutions that seem to fix the ‘Compiling Shaders’ screen not loading in the game. We’ll cover them all below:

Restart the game and check for updates

The simple and easy fix you should try first is just restarting the game along with the Steam client.

When I did this, I found there was a small update that hadn’t been installed. Once it was downloaded and I booted the game up again, the shaders loaded as normal.

If you don’t find an update queued after trying this method, right-click Dragon’s Dogma 2 in your Steam library and perform the following:

  • Select ‘Properties’
  • Press ‘Updates’
  • Click ‘Always keep this game updated’ from the dropdown menu at the top

If an update still doesn’t appear, try booting up the game again to see if it works. If all is fine then you don’t need to worry, otherwise keep trying the troubleshooting methods below.

Restart your PC

The next solution is to just restart the entire computer and try all over again. This is another classic fix for many problems you can encounter in games.

Verify files

If you’re still encountering the bug, the issue may lie with the installed files, meaning you’ll want to verify they’re all working as intended. To do this, perform the following steps:

  • Right-click Dragon’s Dogma 2 in your library
  • Select ‘Properties’
  • Click ‘Installed Files’
  • Press ‘Verify integrity of game files’
  • Let the process finish

Any erroneous files will be fixed during this process, without reinstalling the game. However, if the problem still persists, there’s one more fix to try.

Reinstall the game

If after all the above, you’re still running into a never-ending ‘Compiling Shaders’ screen, you’ll need to uninstall Dragon’s Dogma 2 and then reinstall it fresh on your PC.

Considering the game is over 60 GB on PC, this is an annoying potential solution, but it will ensure all the files are reset.

If the error continues even after reinstalling the game, you’ll need to contact Steam or Capcom support for more specialised advice.
