Fortnite has become one of the best games to show off your personal style or the fandoms you belong to, but it can be costly to keep buying cosmetics – so you might be wondering if there are any free skins available.
Despite offering no competitive advantage, it’s not hard to see why Fortnite’s ever-growing collection of skins and outfits has become so enticing. Whether it’s a crossover like Naruto or an original character like Jonesy, everyone has their favourites, but there’s nothing better than getting a skin for free!
Are there any free skins in Fortnite?
There are currently two free skins available in Fortnite and you can see details of them below:

You’ll need to log in to the game before December 11, 2023, for a chance to claim Runway Racer, while the Redcap skin needs to be earned by January 9, 2024. You can see more details about unlocking them below.
How to get the Runway Racer skin
In order to get the Runway Racer skin for free in Fortnite, you’ll need to claim the Runway Racer Quests and then gain 50 Levels in the game. You’ll also unlock matching cosmetics including the Premiere Poms Pickaxe and the Auto Clutch Back Bling as you work your way up to that 50-level target.
You can claim the Runway Racer Quests by logging into Fortnite at any point before December 11, 2023. You’ll then have until January 1, 2024, to complete all of the quests and level up enough to get that free skin!

How to get the Redcap skin
The only way to get the free Redcap skin is to sign up for the Refer a Friend 3.0 scheme on the official website. You’ll then need to refer a friend who’s never played Fortnite before, or who’s played less than two hours in the past 30 days, and complete quests together.
There are five quests and rewards to unlock, but the Redcap skin will be particularly difficult to get as you’ll need to earn 50 Levels with your friend. Check out our levelling-up fast guide for some tips on how to do this. You’ve got until January 9, 2024, to unlock this skin.

How to get more free skins in Fortnite
While the skins listed above are the only ones you can claim for free right now, the game occasionally throws out more freebies for players to claim via other methods so it’s always worth keeping an eye out.
The biggest chance to get free skins is the Winterfest event that happens every December. During last year’s event, players could get the Sled Ready Guff and Arctic Adeline skins by opening free presents every day, so we’re expecting something similar this year.
Aside from the Winterfest event, Epic Games occasionally hosts limited-time tournaments in Fortnite to celebrate collaborations, where the top-performing players will get the skin or matching cosmetics for free. You’ll need skill to get them, but it’s always worth trying!
