When you type some text into a cell in Google Sheets, it won’t automatically fit into that cell.
Instead, the text will come out of the cell and overflow to the next column(s).
Unfortunately, there is no keyboard shortcut to fit/keep text into a cell.
Therefore, you need to manually wrap the text to avoid text overflow.
To fit text in Google Sheets, you can wrap text or resize columns to fit the data.
Here are two methods to adjust text in Google Sheets.
- Method 1: Break the text line
- Method 2: Fit the data
Method 1: Break the text line
To adjust text in Google Sheets by wrapping them:
- Select all columns/rows (shift + click).
- Click “Format” on the top navigation bar.
- Select “Package”.
- Select “Package”.
After you have selected “Pack”, the text in the columns (that you have selected) will be wrapped.
Wrap will fit/keep text in a cell based on column width.
Therefore, the text will not overflow the cell.
If you are writing in a new column, you need to wrap the text in it again.
Method 2: Fit the data
To match text in Google Sheets by matching them with data:
- Select all columns/rows (shift + click).
- Right click on a column/row.
- Select “Resize columns X – Y”.
- Select “Fit to data”.
- Click “OK” to save your changes.
After you have selected “Fit to data”, all text will fit all cells.
Similar to line breaks, the text will fit the width of each column.
You can edit the size of a column by right-clicking on it and clicking “Resize Column”.
Instead of selecting “Fit to data”, select “Enter new column width in pixels” and enter the width you want to set for the column(s).
