Connecting with people is one of the main purposes of social media and online networking. And since making connections starts with finding the people you want to connect with, it’s pretty important that you know how to do that. Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram and all other popular social networking platforms have different methods for finding people.
You can use either social network to find people who share your interests and add them or follow their updates.
The most common method of finding people on social media networks is to search for their username or legal name. But it’s not an effective method to find people you know because many people use the same name and username on the same app. In addition, it is quite time consuming. Finding someone by their phone number is a more efficient approach.

Find people on Instagram by phone number
Accessing your contacts or address book to find friends is a common feature of Facebook and Twitter. However, not many people know that you can also find people on Instagram by their phone number. It’s pretty nifty and is hidden in the Instagram app.
If you don’t remember your Instagram friend’s username, full name or any name(s), that’s okay. You can find and contact them using their phone number — it only works if they’ve added it to their Instagram account.

Find someone by their phone number
First, you want to make sure that you have the person’s number saved in your phone book. Also, if you want to find more than one person, make sure their phone number is saved in the phone book (Android or iOS) on your device. Only then, follow the steps below.
Method 1: Using Root Options
Step 1: Launch the Instagram app on your phone and tap on the Profile icon in the lower left corner of the app.
Step 2: On your profile page, tap the Hamburger menu icon in the upper right corner to bring up the profile option. Select Discover People.
Step 3: On the Find People page, navigate to the Contacts section and tap the Connect Contacts button.
Step 4: If it’s your first time using this feature, Instagram will ask for permission to access your phone’s contacts. Tap the Allow option to give Instagram access to your contact list.
That will allow the app to access your contact list and identify people already on Instagram.
Step 5: After granting the application permission to access contacts, Instagram will automatically sync the phone number from your phone to your account.
All Instagram accounts associated with a phone number on your contacts will then appear in the Contacts section of the Find/Discover People page. You can then continue to choose who you want to follow.
Note:
Step 6: If there is no phone number in your contact list associated with your Instagram account, the message ‘No contacts’ will be displayed.
If you can’t find your friends by their phone numbers, there are only two reasons. They signed up with a different number, or they didn’t add one at all.
Method 2: Let Instagram find your friends
Step 1: Launch the Instagram app and navigate to the Profile section of the app.
Step 2: Tap the Hamburger menu icon in the top left corner and select Settings at the bottom of the screen.
Step 3: On the App Settings page, select ‘Follow and invite friends’
Step 4: On the next page, select Contact Tracking and Instagram will list all the usernames (pronounced: Instagram accounts) connected to a phone number in your contact list.
Step 5: If none of the phone numbers in your contact list are on Instagram, a message that says ‘No contacts’ will appear on the screen.
Whenever your contact joins Instagram using their phone number or connects their phone number to their Instagram account, they will appear in the Contacts section of the app.
Be careful
- Trying to find someone you don’t know (personally) on Instagram with their phone number can be considered unethical.
- You won’t be able to find people who haven’t linked their phone numbers to their Instagram accounts using the two methods listed above.
