One of the most important things a person can worry about when moving to a new place or planning a road trip with his or her family or friends is driving directions.
Of course, many of us carry a modern smartphone in our pocket with navigation features, but they are not always reliable. Your phone may run out of battery, or you may not get a data connection while on the go, which can make your smartphone silly.
If you ask me, I still prefer old paper maps for navigation but I didn’t buy one from the local stationery store. Instead, I create my custom map using Google Maps on my computer before departing for my destination.
Google Maps for the browser is the best and most reliable method for finding driving directions from one place to another, except for occasional glitches like this. ????

How to find directions and travel routes
Step 1: Go to Google Maps and click the Get Directions button.
Step 2: When you click the button, you will be asked to enter the name of the source and destination. You can always add more destinations by clicking the add destination button if you plan to stop by a point or two during your trip.
Step 3: Now enter your origin and destination name. For example, when I want to drive to Pune from Mumbai, I simply enter my name in the search box and click get directions.
Step 4: Google can suggest you more than one route along with the estimated distance and time to travel and which route you choose is up to you. Simply click on any of the suggested routes to display the respective directions. When you choose one of the routes, you can see detailed driving instructions on the left sidebar.
Note: The smallest route is not always the best route. For example, a freeway always takes precedence over a state highway even if the highway is 2 to 3 kilometers longer. Sometimes you will need to be cautious while deciding which route to take.
Step 5: By default, directions are shown for cars, but you can also get public transit routes (bus or train or subway). Since public transit information for all locations is not known to Google, they may not be visible depending on the location. To change your transit type, simply click the icon that resembles the method you want to perform.
Note: Suppose you are planning a vacation or family trip and you suddenly see a tourist destination that you want to include, you can simply drag the route to the new place and include. The new direction will be reflected immediately on the left sidebar.
Step 6: You can also get information such as local weather, photos, terrain and satellite images for a clear picture. After you set your preferred route, you can save it to my maps for later reference, or you can send it to your friends or simply print it before you go on vacation.
I recommend bringing a printout of the map you make if you’re heading to an uncharted territory and don’t want to get lost in the middle of nowhere.
