One of the least known features in the most recent release of OS X, Mountain Lion, is undoubtedly the newly improved dictation engine. Of course, there are plenty of dictation apps for iPhone and other smartphones these days, and even for Macs, there are always some solid third-party apps out there. However, to have this tool as a native feature on our Mac is always welcome, especially if you have to write a lot on different applications.
So why isn’t this feature enabled by default? The reason is that to use it we need to authorize Apple to use some of our personal data (like with Siri) so that we can get more accurate results every time.
Note: Also, like with Siri, you need internet access to use Dictation on your Mac.
To enable dictation on your Mac, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open System Preferences control panel and click Dictation & Speech icon.
Step 2: Click on the . icon Spell navigation. Then mark ABOVE check box next to Spell: and click Turn on dictation button on the dialog box.
Step 3: From the drop-down menu below, select (or create) the shortcut you want to use to enable Dictation. In the same way, use Language: drop-down menu to choose your preferred language from the listed languages.

Then simply press the previously selected shortcut and start dictation when the microphone appears. - One of the great things about this feature is that because it is system-wide integrated, it works with any text editor including complex ones like Microsoft Word or text fields. as simple as searching for something in Spotlight, for example.
- Dictation supports continuous speaking for up to 30 seconds at a time, so make sure not to exceed that time, or the rest of what you say won’t be recognized.
- For better speech recognition, Dictation can temporarily turn off the fans on your Mac, so don’t worry if they turn back on completely as soon as you’re done dictating.
- The system learns from your voice, so you’ll see its results improve over time.
- Dictation commands like question marks, commas, parentheses, etc. are quite simple and you just have to say them while dictating for the system to recognize them.
