If you’re a parent, let us start by mentioning that we’ve covered the steps to

enable parental controls on Windows 7

and Windows 8

. It’s easy to set up and change settings whenever you need to. But the latter requires you to do it on the same computer. What if you need to do it but aren’t near your Windows computer?

We are going to talk about the Family Safety website that allows you to manage all your parental settings online. It allows you to manage accounts and change access levels and permissions on the go, without having to touch your local machine. However, only works for Windows 8, so Windows 7 users are out of luck here.

Hot Tip: Windows Phone 8 device owners might just be interested in learning about parental controls and children’s accounts on your device.

Follow the link to navigate to the Family Safety website. You will be asked to log in to your account. Sign in with the Microsoft username you associated with your Windows account (admin account).

When the web page opens, you can see the list of accounts/users associated with the given account. It will also indicate the parent account and the main account. Take a look at the image below. I have a parent account and a test account on the list.

You can control what websites the account can visit, how long the account can stay active, and what games and apps can be accessed. Besides, the activity report is a way to get a complete report or log of the user. And, request is a mechanism for the user to ask the administrator for some permission.

Look back at the home page. You’ll see three links at the bottom of the list of accounts. That’s where you can Add a new parent, Set a family member as a parent And Manage a list of family members.

Conclusion

Controlling your computer, the user accounts on it, and their respective settings couldn’t be easier than this. I mean you are actually changing the settings and permissions on the machine and the sub-account without actually logging into your computer.

Through this feature, Windows 8 has made it easier to customize parental controls, and this will likely lead to more parents using the feature. Bad news for the kids.
