There are many methods of connecting to virtual machines in VMware. You can do it manually, through the VMware Workstation program, or install TeamViewer, LogMeIn or any other remote access software. If you only need access within a local network and don’t want to access the server all the time, it’s easy to enable standard remote desktop connections.
Enabling remote desktop connections in VMware is done regularly, through the operating system and in the VMware network settings. We must set up port forwarding in VMware so that the program knows what to do when we request access via the remote computer.
Configure VMware Connection for RDP (Remote Desktop)
First, VMware needs to be configured to forward RDP requests to the IP address the virtual machine is using.
Step 1: Launch the menu item Virtual Machine > Settings.
From Hardware tab, select Adapters and choose NAT as connection type.
Step 2: Search for command prompt in the start menu from within the virtual machine. Enter ipconfig in the prompt and look for a value after IPv4 address. Record this address for later use. Ours is 192.168.163.133.
Step 3: Now select menu item Edit > Virtual Network Editor.
select NAT network type and then select NAT settings.
Step 4: From this new prompt, click Add to include a new port forwarder.
Enter the following information:
Gate team: 9997
The Gate nest number is simply an open port number. If you’re not sure which number to use, choose the number we have here.
Type: TCP
IP address of the virtual machine: Enter the IP you recorded in Step 2.
Virtual machine port: 3389
This port number is 3389 by default, but can be changed through registry editing. If you are not aware of any changes, select the change we have here.
Save any open prompts for possible configuration changes.
Step 5: The final step is to enable RDP connections from within the operating system itself.
In Windows 8.1, search for Who can use the remote control from the start menu to narrow down the results.
For Windows 7, search Remote desktop from the start menu and select Select users who can use the remote desktop.
For Windows XP, right click My computer from the start menu and navigate to Distant setting.
Choose to Allow remote connection to this computer for any of these operating systems.
Connect to a virtual machine using RDP
Connect to the VM just like you would any other computer. Open Mssc from the start menu and enter the IP address or computer name and press Connect.

It is much easier to connect to any type of computer, virtual or not, using Windows Remote Desktop. The screen is unobstructed by extra menu settings, and you can maximize the window and use the machine as if it were right in front of you.
