Microsoft Edge is my favorite browser on mobile and desktop. The software giant’s latest chromium browser offers cross-platform availability, unique functions like Edge Collection, and compatibility with all Chrome extensions. There’s a lot to like about Windows 10’s default web browser. But all your fun may be in vain if the browser keeps crashing on you.
This is a known issue among Windows 10 users. And there are many factors at play here. Sometimes, Microsoft Edge stops responding or keeps crashing. It can be a real pain because you can have dozens of tabs open for research or watch the latest TV series on Netflix or Amazon Prime.
In this post, we will talk about all the main reasons why Microsoft Edge crashes on Windows 10 and how to fix it. Start.
1. Restart your computer
Sometimes, simply restarting your PC can solve serious problems with your Windows 10 machine and OS. You can click the Start button and select Restart to restart your computer.
Now go ahead and start browsing to see if the Edge hanging issue has been resolved.
2. Change Google Search Engine
Many users have reported that the Edge browser keeps crashing when they set Google as the default search engine of the Edge browser. As a temporary workaround, you can change the default search engine to Bing, Yahoo or DuckDuckGo from Edge Settings.
Open Edge browser and go to Settings. Navigate to Privacy, Search and Services > Address Bar and Search.
You will see the Search Engine used in the address bar preferences. Click on it and choose a non-Google search engine.
3. Turn off Search Suggestions
What if you want to keep Google as your default search engine? After all, it’s the best search engine out there with superior recommendations, AI, etc. In that case, you can temporarily disable search suggestions from Edge Settings.
Open Edge browser and go to Settings. Navigate to Privacy, Search and Services > Address Bar and Search. Turn off search suggestions from the menu and you should be good to go back to Google as your default search engine.
A corrupted cache can ruin your day. Clearing the cache is almost always safe, so there’s no reason not to try.
If browsing data is overloaded in your Microsoft Edge, it can cause the browser to slow down or stop responding altogether.
When Microsoft Edge becomes unresponsive in Windows 10, you can clear your browsing history, cache, and cookies for your browser.
Step 1: Open Microsoft Edge and tap the three-dot menu above.
Step 2: Go to Settings > Privacy, Search and Services.
Step 3: Navigate to Clear browsing data > Choose what to clear.
Step 4: Select Cookies and Cache and click Clear data at the bottom.
Then relaunch Microsoft Edge browser and check if Edge hang issue is fixed.
5. Close Edge properly
Sometimes Edge stops responding because the tabs you’ve closed over time never actually close the process. These edge processes add up and consume a lot of RAM. Ultimately, this behavior results in Microsoft Edge crashing, freezing, or not opening at all.
Follow the steps below to close Edge completely on Windows 10.
Step 1: Press the Windows key and open the start menu.
Step 2: Type Task Manager and press enter to open the program.
Step 3: Right-click on the top-level Microsoft Edge process (the one with the number next to it) and select End task.
That will close all running Edge processes, freeing up RAM space and allowing you to relaunch Edge. You should also watch for other processes running in the background. Close the irrelevant ones and that will free up more RAM space on your Windows 10 device.
6. Disable Edge Extensions
As you know, Microsoft Edge comes with Google’s Chromium engine built-in. Therefore, it works perfectly fine with all Google Chrome extensions. Using extensions, one can add more features to Edge’s basic interface and functionality.
However, some may not be under active maintenance, may be outdated, or develop incompatible with new Edge builds.
If you have dozens of Edge extensions installed, it can be difficult to figure out which extension is causing the problem. Therefore, the simplest solution is to disable all extensions and then enable only the ones you need at a time.
Step 1: Tap the three-dot menu on the Edge home screen.
Step 2: Go to the Extensions menu and select Remove to remove the extensions.
7. Update Windows
The Microsoft Edge problem is also a serious problem for Microsoft. The browser is an integral part of the OS. Software giants usually quickly fix such problems with small Windows patches. You can open the Settings app on Windows 10 and go to Windows updates. If there are any updates available, download and install them.
Start using Microsoft Edge again
You can easily fix Microsoft Edge hanging behavior on Windows 10 with the tricks mentioned above. I turned off search suggestions from the Edge Settings menu and it solved the problem for me. Let us know which trick works for you in the comments section below.
