Twitter may not be as big as Facebook, but it’s still one of the important social media platforms. Twitter is a place where all the current affairs, news and controversy are hotly discussed and debated. Meanwhile, trolls can reply to your tweets with malicious, sarcastic and controversial comments that are insulting and disturbing. That’s why it’s important to control and set who can reply to your tweets on Twitter. It was not possible until recently.
Twitter has finally updated their app, giving users more control over who can reply to their tweets.
Sometimes, you want to share something and would rather leave it without any comment or discussion afterward. Yes, you can do it now. No more checking back and replying to comments when you don’t want to.
Let’s see how it works on web, Android and iOS platforms.
1. Set Who Can Reply to Tweets on Twitter Web
Step 1: Open Twitter in your favorite browser and click the What’s Happening box on Twitter to create a new tweet.
Step 2: Compose tweet as usual. You should now notice a new globe icon that says “Everybody can reply”. It is the default state and there is no way to change it to another state.
Click it once to show more options. You can choose:
- Everyone: anyone and everyone who follows you, or not, can comment. This is how it has always been.
- People you follow: only people you follow on Twitter can comment.
- Only people you mention: Use @username to tag in tweets, and only people you’ve tagged in can reply to tweets.
Step 3: Choose an option and then post the tweet as usual.
Go on. Try replying to tweets and see what happens.
You can also check your tweet settings after you’ve posted. Just open the tweet and you will see the selected option below it.
It’s worth noting that there’s no way to change the settings after you’ve posted the tweet. There is no edit button on Twitter yet. Clicking the arrow button brings up a menu where you can Delete tweets, among other things, but that’s all.
Deleting a tweet is an option if you soon realize your mistake when there is no response or comment. Once the tweet went viral, it was a different story.
2. Set Who Can Reply to Tweets on Twitter Android
The steps for the Twitter client for Android remain more or less the same.
Step 1: Open the Twitter app on your smartphone and click the feather icon with the plus sign to create a new tweet.
Step 2: Share whatever you want and you will find a new control button waiting for you at the bottom of the screen. Tap the ‘Everyone can reply’ button.
Step 3: Choose one of the three available options just like you did in the web app.
Step 4: Click the Tweet button to post it.
You can see the selected option at the bottom of the screen before tweeting. That reduces the chance of making mistakes.
3. Set Who Can Reply to Tweets on Twitter iOS
Step 1: Open the Twitter app on your iPhone and tap the feather with the plus icon to compose a new tweet.
Step 2: Enter the content you want to share and then click on the globe icon below to set the reply option.
Step 3: Choose one of the three available options.
Step 4: Submit that update.
Like Twitter’s web app, there’s no way to edit a tweet once you’ve posted it on Android and iOS phones. That means you can’t change permissions either. You will have to delete the tweet and start over. If that’s the case, copy the content before deleting so you don’t have to re-enter the whole thing, and make sure to fix any other mistakes or add whatever you want.
Set boundaries
It’s good to see that Twitter has finally made changes to the user aspect for a long time. They seem to have taken a cue from Facebook for this one. Facebook offers a similar feature where you can identify with whom you share your status updates. In the case of Twitter, things are a little different.
You only restrict who can reply to the tweet, not who can see it. Anyone can see the tweet, but only people you’re following or people you mention can reply if you choose. You can’t tweet a personal update on Twitter and share it with select people. I guess that’s the next step, but that’s not what Twitter was built for. It’s more than a Facebook thing.
