Google News is all that Apple News has to offer. Neat UI elements and, of course, highly relevant news stories, make staying up to date with the latest happenings an absolute pleasure. After all, Google’s ongoing efforts at data collection have its uses.
Thanks to some customization features, things could be even better.
If you enjoy reading for a long time, consider yourself lucky. Google News for iOS brings a built-in dark theme to a panel that works seamlessly within the app. Well, that’s mostly it, but you can work it out on your own for the weird article that doesn’t work with the topic.
So let’s see how you can enable dark mode for Google News and then go over some more tips for a much-improved experience.
Turn on Dark Mode
You can easily toggle Google News’ built-in dark theme from the app’s Settings panel. The following steps show you how to do that.
Step 1: Tap your profile picture in the upper right corner of your iPhone or iPad.

Step 3: Tap Dark Theme.
Step 4: Tap Night to have the dark theme turn on automatically at night or tap Always to apply this theme all the time.

However, you will notice that some articles will not display the dark theme. That happens with news sources that are not fully compatible with the app. Read on to find out what you can do about it.
Three-click smart reverse
Articles that don’t support the Google News dark theme look horrible. For such cases, consider using the built-in Smart Invert feature in iOS. It’s a good alternative to any app or in this case dark mode isn’t available.
And not. You don’t have to wade through multiple menus just to turn that thing on. Instead, you can bind it to the Home button (or the Power button on the latest iOS devices) to turn it on and off at will.
Step 1: On the iOS Settings app, tap General, then tap Accessibility.
Step 2: Scroll all the way down, then tap Accessibility Shortcut.
Step 3: Tap Smart Color Invert.
Now, just press the Home button (or the Power button) three times to switch to Smart Invert mode whenever you come across an inactive article with a dark theme.
It won’t look as polished as the original dark theme in Google News — you might see a weird inversion from time to time. Still, it’s the best possible alternative.
Remember to turn off Smart Invert after you finish reading the article to prevent it from clashing with the Google News dark theme.
Tip: You can also turn Smart Invert on and off via the Control Center on your iPhone or iPad.

Disable autoplay videos
Autoplay videos in Google News may have caught your attention. And with dark mode enabled, they look amazing! But while whether you like them or not is entirely up to personal taste, you can’t deny the fact that they are mostly distracting. Not to mention the huge chunks of mobile data that you also lose. Thankfully, you can disable autoplay videos entirely or make them only play on Wi-Fi.
Step 1: Go to the Settings panel, then tap Video Autoplay.
Step 2: Tap Wi-Fi Only to set videos to play automatically only on Wi-Fi, or tap Disabled to block them completely.
Change text size
By default, the Google News app uses the system text size on your iPhone or iPad to display text in articles. However, you can remove this limitation and increase or decrease the text size to your liking.
Step 1: On the Settings panel, tap Post Text Size.
Step 2: Turn off the switch next to Use System Text Size, then choose between the available text sizes — Small, Normal, and Large.
Step 3: Start reading an article and you will see the change in text size reflected immediately.
Customize notifications
Google News makes a lot of announcements. That gets tiresome pretty quickly. However, instead of managing them at the system level, consider configuring them from the app. There are many options that you can modify to filter out unwanted messages.
Step 1: In the Settings panel, tap Notifications.
Step 2: Turn off the switch next to the types of notifications you don’t want to receive.
You can also limit the number of notifications you receive for each category in general by using the slider below Number of Notifications.
Using the More Menu
Don’t let Google News dictate what you want to see. Tap More three small dots below any item, then use the options inside to determine if you want to stop viewing a feed from a news source, or if you want to increase or reduce the amount of content you get from said source.
Of course, the More menu also lets you share, save for later use, or even access the complete news feed from one source. Make good use of it.
Add your favorites
See that Favorites tab? It’s not just an area where you go to see your saved articles. Go to it and take a few minutes to add your favorite topics and sources that you want to follow, as well as places that interest you.
This way, you not only have faster access to your favorite types of stories, but also let Google News know your personal preferences. As a result, expect to see even more relevant feeds appear in the For You tab over time.
