iMessage is finally getting the highly requested features in the iOS 16 and macOS Ventura updates. You can now correct embarrassing typos or undo messages in wrong conversations. You no longer need to follow up with an explanation. Here’s everything you need to know about editing or undoing sent messages in iMessage on iPhone and Mac.
iMessage competitors like WhatsApp and Telegram allow users to edit and unsend messages. With iOS 16, Apple caught up with the competition with the new Undo Send feature. Let’s check both functions are working on iPhone and Mac.
Update your iPhone and Mac to the latest version
As we mentioned in the introduction, the ability to edit and undo sent messages is available in the latest iOS and macOS builds. You must update your iPhone and Mac to the latest version to use this function. Follow the steps below to install iOS 16 and macOS Ventura on iPhone and Mac respectively.

Update iOS on iPhone
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Select the General menu.
Step 3: Click Software Update.
Step 4: Download and install the iOS 16 build on your iPhone.
Update macOS on Mac
Step 1: Select the Apple icon in the top left corner.
Step 2: Open the System Preferences menu.
Step 3: Click Software Update.
Step 4: Download and install the macOS Ventura (13.0) update on your Mac.
Edit and undo sending messages on iPhone
We’ll first show you how to edit and undo sending messages on your iPhone, then we’ll look at some limitations.
Step 1: Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Send a message in any chat.
Step 3: If you make a mistake, press and hold a message and select Edit.
Step 4: Edit your message and press the check mark.
iMessage will show an indicator and history for edited messages. You can edit a message up to five times.
If you accidentally sent an iMessage to the wrong group or conversation, you can undo to delete the message from both sides. So far, the limitation of this feature is that the other person also needs to be running iOS 16 or later on that iPhone. Telegram deletes messages without leaving a trace. iMessage and WhatsApp leave messages when you undo a message. While some prefer Telegram’s implementation, iMessage and WhatsApp get it right by leaving a note for the recipient.
Edit and undo sending messages on Mac
When Apple releases a new feature for any built-in app, the same feature is available on other platforms as well. That’s the best part about the Apple ecosystem for a seamless experience. For example, when Apple announced the ability to edit or undo text in iMessage on iPhone, the same feature became available on iPad and Mac in the iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura updates. Step 3: Use two fingers to click on the message content (or use the right mouse button to click) and select Edit.
Step 4: Enter a new message and tick to send the edited message.

The trick to undo sending a message works the same way as it does on an iPhone.
Step 1: Right-click on the message with your mouse or use two-finger click from the trackpad and select ‘Undo Send’.
Step 2: The Messages app will delete the message from the chat.
Before you update your iPhone or Mac to the latest software and start deleting old messages, take a look at the current limits.
Edit and undo sending messages in iMessage: Restrictions
- You can edit a message for up to 15 minutes after sending it. You won’t see the ‘Edit’ button after 15 minutes.
- You can unsend any message up to 2 minutes after sending. Two minutes is enough to realize your mistake and delete the message.
- The recipient’s device needs to be running the latest iOS 16/iPadOS 16/macOS Ventura. Otherwise, the person will still see the message on devices running the old software.
Fix your typo in iMessage
