You will be able to download files to any specific folder of your choice based on the type of file you are downloading. So let’s dig deep and see how you can do it. And yes, this is specifically for Google Chrome.

Organize your downloads folder

You can organize your downloads folder on your PC with a simple Chrome extension – Download Router. It allows you to save your files to a specific folder inside the download folder. But you can specify a different folder than the download folder, there is a workaround for that. It is explained in the next section. In this section, see how you can use this extension to stay organized Download folder.

Immediately after downloading and installing, you will be taken to an options page where you need to set download routing rules for your downloads. Now, there are 3 ways you can set these rules. The first is based on the File Type. The extension will download a specific file type (e.g. mp3) to Music folder. The second is to rely on Referrer. Here referrer means website (e.g. facebook.com). So anything downloaded from facebook.com will be placed in your specified Facebook folder. And finally based on the Filename. The extension will check the filename and see if it matches the name in the rule that you have set. If yes then it will be placed in the folder set by you.

Now, let’s see how you can set these rules. Set up a rule based on . first File type. By default, rules for jpeg images and torrent clients are set. Here, I will add two more rules. For mp4 videos and GIF images. Before you set the rule, one thing you need to know is that here you will not put a file extension (eg .mp4). However, you would set the MIME type for that particular file. Below is a complete list of MIME types for all file types.

Rules based on file type

Here I have added MIME for mp4 video (video/mp4) and GIF image (image/gif) along with respective destination folder. Now this destination folder will be in Download folder. You can also create a hierarchy of folders like I did here for GIFs. Don’t forget to add a “/” after the folder name if it’s the root folder.

Don’t panic! Folders will be created after you download the files. So don’t go check on the web why it doesn’t create the target directory right after installation.

Here’s an example of a Referer-based download rule. I used facebook.com

Rules based on referrer

This is me setting source domain for facebook scontent.fdel1-1.fna.fbcdn.net. Because Facebook images and videos are not downloaded from facebook.com but from CDN (Content Delivery Network). So you need to set the CDN URL and not the actual source domain. This will only happen for large sites like Facebook, Twitter and others. To check the URL, just right click on an image and open it in a new tab. You will get the source URL.

Another option is to set the global referrer directory. Selecting this option will download the file to a folder with the same name as the source URL. Next are the rules based on filenames. This is also simple. You just need to add a keyword that matches the filename and it will be placed in the target directory. You can set advanced keywords as shown below.

Rules based on filenames

Here, I added | between description keyword or. Any keyword that matches the filename it will be placed in that target directory. Also, keywords are NOT case sensitive.

Next, you need to set what kind of rule to execute first. This is important because if you set a file type rule for a jpeg image it will be downloaded image/jpeg folder but it is downloaded batman V superman folder. Because the image you download has keywords Batman match filename rules. So you need to set what kind of rule to execute first to your liking.

Inheritance system enforces rules

Next, let’s see how you can download files outside of the downloads folder.

Note: If you are using a download manager extension other than Chrome’s native extension, it may cause an error. So you will have to remove that particular download manager.

Route your downloads to your specified folder

Due to security concerns, the Chrome API does not allow developers to allow their users to download files outside of the Downloads folder. So there is a workaround on how you can achieve this. We will use Symbolic Links or Symbolic Links to move a folder inside the downloads folder to another folder on your hard drive.

Symbolic link

Open Command Prompt as Administrator and add the following command.

mlink /D “Link destination” “Destined folder location”

Replace Target Link with Download directory address and Desired location with the folder on the other drive where you want it to appear. The example is in the screenshot above.

Here, you are creating a soft symbolic link. So you are actually creating a shortcut to your desired directory. It will redirect you to the desired folder on the hard drive. You can create a hard symlink, meaning it will actually appear as if the file is in that directory. More on that here.
