Imagine you are playing an intensive game on Android and aim at your enemies. When you are about to pull the trigger to kill, a message pops up on the screen and you miss the target. And instead, you get shot in the game. Oh, horror!
Most new phones these days have a built-in Game Mode that lets you snooze notifications and block calls while you’re playing a game. All you have to do is enable it, and that’s it. But if not, the following methods will allow you to enjoy your gaming time without distractions.
We will explore two methods. While the first one automates the whole conversion process DND when you launch your game application, the second method is a manual process, albeit a bit different.
Method 1: Using MacroDroid
For this method, we will use the help of an automation application called MacroDroid. This app is similar to Tasker. However, the interface is simple and uncomplicated so creating scripts and tasks is child’s play. If you know the structure of the work at hand, all you need to do is create the diagram and recreate the same diagram in MacroDroid.
Similar to most macros, you’ll need a trigger or an action to set the macro to work. In our case, enabling DND mode is the action, while launching the game app is the trigger.
Let’s see how to automate this task of turning off notifications when playing a game.
Step 1: Tap Add Macro to add your first trigger. Now tap Apps > Launched/App Closed > App Launched.
Select the name of the game from the list. All you have to do is tick the boxes and press the OK button.
Step 2: Now it’s time to add action. Tap the Actions tab, scroll down and select Volume and tap the first option (Priority/Do Not Disturb mode).
That will prompt you with a window. Select Allow Priority Notifications and press OK. Since MacroDroid will make some changes to the integration settings, you will need to provide some permissions.
Step 3: Once done, all you have to do is click on the checkmark icon and give the macro a name. From now on, whenever you launch the game, your phone will go into DND mode. Cool, right?
However, this method is not complete if you forget to switch back to normal mode after stopping playing any game. We’ll need a second macro to do this conversion. As you might have guessed, it will be the opposite of the first one.
Step 4: To create it, tap Add Macro. Only this time, instead of creating an app launch event, we’ll create an app close event. Tap Activate > Apps > Launched/Close App > App Closed and select the game again.
Step 5: Next, tap Actions, scroll down to Volume and Priority mode, and then select Allow all.
Step 6: Save the macro and give it a name, that’s it. From now on, every time you sit and play, there will be no more notifications to bother you.
Pro tips
A few things to note
For the process to go smoothly, you have to keep a few things in mind. The first is to remove MacroDroid from the Battery Optimizer apps list. For those who don’t know, the system will turn off apps that consume more battery or stay idle for a long time to save battery.
To do so, go to phone settings and navigate to Settings > Battery > Battery optimization, find MacroDroid and select Don’t optimize.
Another thing to note is that MacroDroid inherits the DND mode on your phone. So if your phone’s DND mode is modified to include prominent notifications during texting and calling, then MacroDroid won’t be able to do much.
To view your phone’s DND settings, search for Do Not Disturb in Settings and check the settings for Calls, Sound, and Notifications. The ideal setting should be None for calls and No Image for notifications.
Once all these settings are in place, rest assured, you can enjoy a distraction-free gaming session.
Method 2: Through Focusbot
Focusbot is an unreleased app that blocks and mutes notifications while the app is on. And it doesn’t end there. It also bundles all notifications under a single roof so you can access them later.
There are also some handy customization features that come with this app. We love the Auto Reply feature when using it so you can text every call and message you missed during that period.
This app is for people looking for peace in this chaotic world (Ok, I’ve gone a bit far here). And what better way to get the most out of any app if you can accomplish two goals at your convenience.
Once it’s set up, all you need to do is tap the Focus ON button and start playing the game. And when you turn off Spotlight mode, all notifications will be in the app for you to see.
game go
Notifications are an important part of any intelligent system. However, they can get distracted at times, especially during grueling gaming sessions. And these two methods will save you time from any interruptions and redirects.
