Launched in 2016, Google Assistant was initially exclusive to Google Pixel devices. However, by the end of 2017, the AI-powered Virtual Assistant was available on all Android devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop and above.
While Google Assistant is powerful and awesome, not everyone likes it. Mainly because it hijacks the phone’s home button. This can be quite annoying because Assistant often pops up if you accidentally hold down the home button.
So if you want to disable pressing and holding the home button to avoid launching the Assistant, we have your back. Here we will tell you how to do it.
Disable Google Assistant Home Button
The steps are slightly different on stock Android devices and those running other custom skins. Let’s see how it’s done on different smartphones.
Android Stocks
To disable this feature on a stock Android device, you need to disable the Assistant app in the settings. Here are the steps:
Step 1: Open Device Settings and go to Applications/Application Manager depending on the option available on your device.
Step 2: Tap Default apps, then Assistant & voice input.
Step 3: Tap on the Assistant Apps option. On the next screen, you will see a list of apps selected by Google as supported apps. Select None to disable Assistant on the home button.
MIUI devices
For phones running Xiaomi’s MIUI, this option is present under the gestures. Here are the steps:
Step 1: Open Settings and go to Additional Settings.
Step 2: Click Shortcut and action.
Step 3: Tap Launch Google Assistant. On the next screen, select None to remove it from the home screen. Alternatively, you can assign Assistant to another gesture or button like the back or menu button.
OnePlus devices
Step 1: Open Settings and go to Apps.
Step 2: Tap Default, then Assist & voice input.
Step 3: Tap on App Assist option and select None from the pop-up window.
Samsung devices
The following steps work on both Samsung Experience and One UI.
Step 1: Open Settings and go to Apps.
Step 2: Tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner and select Default apps from the menu.
Step 3: Tap on Device Support Apps option then Device Support app again on the next screen.
Step 4: Select None to disable it.
Completely Disable Google Assistant
Do you want to completely disable Google Assistant on your phone? If yes, then you can. While you can’t remove Assistant from your phone, you can certainly turn it off.
To do so, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the Google app on your device and tap the More tab in the bottom right corner.
Step 2: Tap Settings, then Settings listed under the Google Assistant label.
Step 3: Go to the Assistant tab. Scroll down and tap the device for which you want to turn off Assistant in Devices with Assistant.
Step 4: Turn off the switch next to Google Assistant. After you do that, Google Assistant won’t pop up with the home button or even a voice command.
To re-enable it, follow the steps mentioned above and toggle the switch next to Google Assistant.
Turn off assistant when plugging in headphones
For many users, Google Assistant keeps popping up when headphones are plugged in, interrupting your work. To prevent this behavior, try these fixes.
Hands-free off
To do so, follow these steps:
Step 1: Launch the Google app and go to More followed by Settings.
Step 2: Tap Settings in the Google Assistant.
Step 3: Select the device in the Assistant tab.
Step 4: Tap More hands-free settings and turn off wired headsets and Bluetooth devices.
Clear cache
Clearing the cache also fixes the problem. It will not erase any data from your device as it is different from data deletion. You won’t log out of the app and it won’t interfere with your settings.
Step 1: Open Settings and go to Applications/Application Manager.
Step 2: Under All apps, tap Google.
Step 3: Tap Storage, then Clear Cache.
Go to Safe Mode
Safe mode is used to troubleshoot the device to find if any third party apps are misbehaving. You need to go into safe mode and use your headset. If the problem is fixed, then the problem is caused by a third party app installed on your device. Delete them one by one and see which fixes the problem.
To go into safe mode, follow these steps:
Step 1: Turn off the device with the Power button.
Step 2: Once the device is turned off, hold the Power button until you see the device manufacturer’s name. Then hold the Power button and hold the Volume Down key until the device boots up. You will be taken to safe mode indicated by the text Safe mode on the screen.
Get the most out of Google Assistant
Google Assistant can be you and your assistant. You can ask it funny questions, and at the same time, you can even control Netflix with it. You can also use it to write notes. The notes will then be saved to your favorite note-taking app.
If you decide to keep the Google Assistant enabled, make sure to explore all of its features. Go ahead and have fun!
