How to Disable Charm Bar (Hot Corners) on Windows 8 and 8.1

The Charm Bar is a great feature in Windows 8 but only if you’re using it on touch-enabled laptops and tablets. However, in normal laptops and desktops, it can be a bit annoying. In my experience using the Charm Bar, it always gets in the way whenever I try to scroll up or down on a page. Quite annoying.

If you’re using Windows 8 or 8.1, try scrolling down and up on this page while pausing in between occasionally. I’m sure that at some point the charm bar will interfere with the scrollbar and mouse, and you’ll have to move the mouse pointer to get rid of it.

The Charm bar can be activated by hovering the mouse pointer on the top right or bottom right corner of your screen and for the same reason it will periodically appear whenever I try to scroll on one page. So the fact that I have never used the Charm Bar since the day I installed Windows 8.1 on my laptop means that I should disable the mouse gestures that enable it.

If you are also facing the same issue and want a more efficient scrolling experience then read on.

Disable upper right corner

If you just want to disable the upper right corner area to show the charms bar, Windows 8.1 has a built-in option for that. Right click on any empty space on the taskbar and click the . icon Attribute options.

Taskbar properties

In the Taskbar and Navigation properties page, navigate to guide tab and uncheck the option ‘When I point to the upper right corner, show the charm’ Under Corner navigation part and save the settings. This will disable the Charm Bar popup, but only from the top right section. However, if that’s still not enough for you, keep reading.

Completely Disable Charm Bar

If you want to completely disable Windows 8’s Charm Bar, there’s a similar registry fix. But instead, we’ll use a simple program called Charm Bar Killer to get the job done.

After you install and launch the program, it will run minimized from the system tray and completely disable the charm bar for you. If you want to disable Windows hot corners (including the application switcher in the top left corner), right click on the Charm Bar Killer icon in the system tray and select the option Kill Top Left Corner.

Kill Charms

The Charm Bar will be disabled as long as the program is running and as soon as you exit it you will start getting the Charm Bar. Don’t forget to enable the option to automatically run at system startup if you want to permanently disable the Charm Bar.

Note: The app will only turn off the hot corners of the Charm Bar. If you plan to use this bar in the future, just press the . button Windows + CLOUD to bring it up.

Conclusion

So that’s how you can completely disable Charm Bar hot corners on Windows 8 and 8.1. The Windows Charm Bar can be useful for quickly searching and sharing in Windows 8. But if you haven’t used the feature after upgrading to Windows 8, you should turn it off once and for all.
