Sleep mode in Windows 10 is useful to save battery when making those much-needed breaks. It turns off the screen putting the computer in low power mode. Some users complain that their Windows 10 computer is not booting from sleep mode.
Pressing a button on the keyboard or moving the mouse is enough to wake the computer from sleep mode. Problems can range from hardware failure to software failure, as we will explore below.
Let’s get started.
1. Mouse or keyboard problems
These are the two most commonly used input devices in the world. Since we use them to wake our computer from sleep, this is where we should start. Check if the mouse and keyboard are working properly. Connect them to another PC just to be sure. You can fix them if something goes wrong.
2. Set sleep mode
There is a difference between sleep and hibernation. You need to pay attention to their individual settings to make sure that your computer doesn’t go into hibernation before it can go to sleep. If that’s the case, you need to press the power button to wake it up. Have you tried that? Go through everything to make sure that doesn’t stop Windows 10 from waking up from sleep.
3. Permission to wake
The mouse and keyboard on your Windows 10 computer may not have permission to wake the computer from sleep mode. Maybe a bug changed the settings. Search for and open Device Manager from the Start menu.
Double click on the Keyboard and right click on the HID Keyboard Device to select Properties.
In the Power Management tab, make sure that the ‘Allow this device to wake the computer’ box is checked. Save settings.
Now, repeat the same process for the HID-compliant mouse.
Wait, there’s more. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and expand the Universal Serial Bus Controller option. Right click on the USB Root Hub to select Properties and in the Power Management tab uncheck the box for the ‘Allow this device to wake the computer’ option.
Allow the computer to go to sleep and try waking it up again. Hopefully, that will work. If not, continue reading.
4. Update the display driver
Could it be that the display drivers are out of date? Open Device Manager again and double-click Desktop. Right click on your monitor name here and select Update Driver.
I also recommend doing the same for your graphics drivers. You’ll find it under Display Adapters.
5. Turn off Fast Startup
Windows 10 comes with a Quick Start feature. There are some pros and cons to using this feature and one of them is that the Windows 10 PC doesn’t wake up from sleep mode.
Right-click the battery icon to select Power Options. You can also search for it in the Control Panel. Click on the ‘Choose what the power button do’ option in the left pane.
Click ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’ at the top, then uncheck the Enable fast startup (recommended) option below. Don’t forget to save the changes.
6. Re-enable hibernation
If the problem persists and your Windows 10 PC cannot boot from sleep, hibernation can be used instead. I mean, it will definitely take some time to wake up but could work as a temporary fix. Things can be much faster if you’re using an SSD.
Hibernation is known to cause conflicts with sleep mode. Re-enabling hibernation from CMD (Command Prompt) can solve it. Search and open CMD from start menu with admin rights.
powercfg.exe/hibernate off powercfg.exe/hibernate on
Type this command and press Enter to execute it. Exit and check again if your computer wakes up from sleep mode.
7. Disable USB selective suspend
Go back to Power Options (like you did in solution 6 above) and click on Plan settings.
Click ‘Change advanced power settings’ here.
You will find the USB selective suspend setting in the USB settings. Click the Enabled link to bring up the drop-down menu and select disable there.
8. Power Troubleshooter
Press Windows key + I to open Settings and search for Find and fix problems with your computer’s power settings.
Click Advanced to select the Apply Repair Automatically option and then follow the on-screen instructions.
9. BIOS Setup
Entering the BIOS on a Windows 10 computer is extremely easy. You don’t have to wait for the right moment to press a key. Once in, go to Wake Up Event Setup and do this:
- Continue from S3 with PS/2 Mouse – Set to On
- Continue from S3 with PS/2 Keyboard – Set it to Any Key
Save everything and exit to restart your computer as usual.
10. ASUS product users
This step is for ASUS users. All ASUS computers come with the InstantOn application. You need to disable or uninstall it. The app is known to conflict with the sleep mode feature in Windows 10 computers.
Bonus
Jacek Łazeczko, a GT reader, found a solution that worked for him to fix the problem. Search for Registry Editor in Windows Search and open it with administrator privileges from the Start menu. See detailed directory structure below.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power
Double click on the CsEnabled file to open it and change the value from 1 to 0 (zero) and save everything.
Finished.
Time to shine
Sleep mode is especially useful for laptop users as they are always looking for ways to save battery. Desktop users don’t have to worry much about that. If nothing works, you can always use hibernate instead, but that’s not the solution. We have shared several solutions above and hope one of them works.
