When it comes to identifying unknown numbers or discovering new contacts, Truecaller is almost unbeatable. It is true that this Yellow Pages for mobile phones is helping with the process of identifying callers and spammers. However, don’t forget that Truecaller also integrates some controversial features like Last Seen, Call Recording and more importantly, its SMS service.
While many people like those features, I find the SMS service particularly annoying. While it’s helpful in blocking spam messages, I’d rather let my favorite SMS app do the work. However, Truecaller’s service ignores many confirmation pop-ups and sets itself as the default messaging service. And what’s worse is that the next time you get a text or OTP code, there will be a bunch of duplicate messages in your inbox. Useful? Yes, not so much.
Okay, I may have exaggerated a bit here, but you get it. In this post, we will share how to remove Truecaller’s messaging service. Watch till the end because we’ve put together some great tricks.
How to delete Truecaller Messaging Service
Step 1: Start by going to Settings > Application manager > Default apps and tapping on the SMS app.
Step 2: Now select your old SMS app from the list as default messaging service.
That will prevent Truecaller from being your default SMS service, but you may continue to receive duplicate messages. Also, Truecaller claims not to store your messages on the server. But, why take the chance?
To disable this feature, open the Settings app and search for Truecaller. Having done that, tap Permissions and toggle the switch for SMS. Told you, it’s pretty simple.
Since you’re on the permissions page, you can also turn off the Microphone permission if you don’t use voice search. Similarly, if you don’t use the recording feature, you can also turn off the Archive permission.
Bonus tips and tricks
1. Scan a photo or business card
Truecaller has come a long way from just being a digital identity service. Over the years, it has introduced a lot of useful features and one of them is the OCR feature for phone number recognition.
Using it, you can scan a number and then search it directly on the Truecaller database. This handy trick will save you the unnecessary trouble of scribbling numbers on note-taking apps or hoarding old business cards.
All you have to do is tap the Search bar and hit the camera icon. Now point your camera at the tag (or sign) and the Truecaller app will recognize it at the speed of light, and no, I’m not kidding. It’s extremely fast.
Tap the number on your screen and the contact name will show up as it does in their database. Open the contact, tap the three-dot menu, and select Save. That saves time and paper. To close the camera, tap the little Cross icon at the top.

2. Turn on Speed Dial
Another slightly hidden feature is Speed Dial, and it’s advantageous if you use Truecaller as your default calling app. The trick here is to assign contacts to different numbers and when you tap call, the call will go through immediately.
You can set these numbers for speed dialing through Settings > General. Scroll down to Speed Dial and enter the numbers by priority.

3. Pin Contacts to Most Called Banners
Since the size of the Most Called banner (the banner at the top) has increased, it makes more sense to pin your favorite callers to it. Simply long press on a contact and select the option to Pin. Simple.
This list is not in any particular alphabetical order, and the contact you pinned first will appear at the top.
4. Manage spam lists
Truecaller blocking doesn’t just extend to individual numbers. There are many ways to block a specific group of numbers. First, you can ban a specific range of numbers or block the entire country code.
These nifty settings are in Block Settings > My Block List. Just tap the Plus icon in the bottom right corner and select the appropriate option.
