macOS Big Sur has introduced an image refresh feature for Mac users. Alongside the new Finder menu, the blur effect in the app’s sidebar, and new icons, Notification Center has received a major update. The Notification Center on Mac combines all the data from many different apps and stores them in a single place. You can also add built-in Apple or third-party widgets of different sizes. You can even use Notification Center to turn on your Mac’s Do Not Disturb mode.
Access the Notification Center on Mac
The Notification Center is located on the right side of your Mac. There are two easy ways to access it on a Mac.
- Go to the upper right corner of your Mac Menu bar and click the date/time to open the menu.
- If you use a trackpad with your Mac, place two fingers near the right edge of the keyboard and swipe left to activate Notification Center. You can swipe right to close the menu. This trick also works with third-party apps.
Customize Notification Center on Mac
It’s pretty easy to remove the clutter from the default Notification Center on Mac. The problem lies in the way macOS handles notifications. It will notify you of incoming notifications, but macOS won’t dismiss them when you read them from the app. Notifications stay in the Center until you open them from the Notification Center.
Notifications are grouped if you have multiple notifications from one app. For example, if you have an active News Alert, the notifications for each news outlet will be grouped, and if you click on a store, the group will expand so you can see all the announcements.
Just click on the group message to expand it. Also, if you hover over a notification, a Delete button will appear in the bottom left which you can use to dismiss it.
Using the System Preferences Menu
Similar to iOS, Apple also allows you to customize the type of notifications on the Mac. If you use Outlook and Slack all day, you don’t need the Notification Center to handle upcoming notifications. Follow the steps below to customize them from the System Preferences menu on your Mac.
Step 1: Use the Command + Space key combination and open the Spotlight Search menu.
Step 2: Enter System Preferences and open the menu.
Step 3: Go to Notifications > and select the app you want to customize.
Step 4: You can choose from None, Banners or Alerts. Enable the Badge icon. Or turn off Notifications for apps completely.
Add or remove widgets from Notification Center
Widgets are greatly enhanced with the macOS Big Sur update. You can add, resize, or remove widgets from the notification center. Some third-party apps already support widgets, and many app developers are adding widgets to their macOS apps.
By default, you will see some default weather and calendar widgets in the notification panel. Follow the steps below to add more widgets to the Mac notification panel.
Step 1: Open your Mac and tap the date/time in the upper right corner.
Step 2: Scroll down and click Edit Widget.
Step 3: On the left, a new menu tray will open that includes all the supported widgets for Mac. The widgets are divided into three sizes – Small, Medium and Large. Choose the right size and you’ll see a live preview of the widget on your screen.
Step 4: Hover over the widget and you will see a ‘+’ icon directly to add the widget to the notification panel.
Step 5: Alternatively, you just need to drag and drop the widget to the notification panel.
You can also use drag and drop to move around widgets in your Mac’s notification panel.
Remove Widget from Notification Center
Removing widgets from Notification Center is pretty easy. Open Notification Center and right click (If using mouse) or double click on the trackpad. From the following pop-up menu, select Remove extension.
You can also resize the widget from the same menu.
Manage notifications intelligently
Although the Notification Center has been upgraded, it took a while to customize it. The best part is that you can also disable certain options if you don’t plan on using them ever.
