How is Gboard customization on iPhone different from Android?
On Android, Gboard gives you the ability to choose a keyboard background color. With recent updates, you can also let it choose colors based on your background image thanks to Material You. A custom image from your gallery can also be set as the background.
While similar options are available on Gboard for iPhone, you can take it a step further by using the small edit icon below each theme. You can set separate colors for the background, keys, text in keys, borders, pop-ups, etc. If you like customization, you’ll love this feature!
How to change themes and wallpapers on Gboard
As mentioned earlier, there are several aspects of Gboard that you can customize on iOS devices. This is the most basic option of all of them.
Step 1: Open the Gboard app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Tap Themes to get access to customization features.
Step 3: Scroll through the different theme options from Default, Landscape, Light Gradient, and Dark Gradient.
Step 4: Choose the one you want to use for your keyboard. If you don’t like any of the themes, scroll back and tap the ‘+’ thumbnail below the Customize option.
Step 5: Go through your images in the Photos app and select the photo you want to use as the background.
Step 6: Adjust your image to use as background. Once done, tap Select.
That will be set as the theme on Gboard. However, this is just the basic theme without any customization. Here’s how you can change and edit other aspects of your keyboard.
How to change the color of keys, text, borders, popups, and swipes on Gboard
Now that you’ve chosen your basic keyboard theme, it’s time to customize it in more detail.
Step 1: Select the basic theme you want to proceed with by following the steps above.
Step 2: Once you’ve selected the theme, tap the little Edit icon in the bottom right part of the thumbnail.
Step 3: This is where you will see all your customization options. A preview of the keyboard is displayed on the bottom half of the screen so you can see your changes in real time.
Change background color
Tap the color of your choice in the Background Color preferences and watch the effect appear on the keyboard below. You can try tapping all the options until you decide on the right one.
Change keys, text, and border color
Scroll down to the Keys section. Here you can choose to completely disable the background for the keys by turning off the switch next to ‘Enable background on keys’. You can also disable ‘Enable background on non-text keys’ for a more uniform look.
If you want to enable the background, you can change the background color by choosing from an array of colors.
Choosing a light background color means that you will need a dark text color. You can also select it in the Text Color option.
At this stage, you can also choose to enable additional borders around each key by enabling the ‘Enable border around keys’ option. Then choose a relevant color for the border.
If you have background enabled for non-text keys, you can change the color now. These keys include backspace, shift, enter, etc.
You can also enable the toggle next to “Enable borders around non-text keys” to add borders to additional keys for a more unified look. Choose a color below Border Color to apply it.
Change the color of the pop-up key
Scroll down further to the Main Pop-up section. Here you can choose the Background Color for the main pop-ups. Choose a color and then try pressing a key on your keyboard to see what that color looks like.
You can also change the text color in the popup. Again, touch a key to check how it looks.
Change the color of the slide when typing by gliding
When you type with a swipe gesture on your keyboard, Swipe Trail is what you get. You can customize its look using the palette below the color of the Swipe slider.
Select a color you like and then swipe across the keyboard to see it in action.
You can also use the slider to increase or decrease the thickness of the stroke.
Turning on the final toggle at the bottom titled Swipe trail sparks will add more Google logos flying out all over the keyboard while typing.
Save custom keyboard
Once you’ve selected and changed all the required settings, tap the DONE button in the top right corner of the Gboard app. This will save the keyboard layout.
