How to Create White Noise Offline On a Chromebook

A little background white noise helps a lot of people focus. If you’re using a Chromebook, you’ll be a bit limited in your options, however, some great extensions support offline playback.

Sound of rain

When all you need is some soothing rain, Rain Sounds has you covered. The extension sits near your address bar in the form of a small cloud. When you select the cloud, you have two sound levels: light rain or rain with a little extra thunder. It’s a constant loop from Rainy Cafe, but it will download to your Chromebook. That allows it to work offline. Simple and effective.

Relaxing Sounds – Glovesoft

Although this extension runs offline, you will need to open it once while online. When you open it online, it will download the audio for you. After that initial online setup, all audio works offline.

relaxing sounds

The extension has about 30 different sounds. These range from outdoor sounds like various birds and insects to musical instruments like drums or guitars. You can mix and match your sounds. Relaxing Sounds allows you to play up to five sounds at the same time. I wish it let you create different groups of sounds like other apps. It does not include a timer. Sounds play until you pause them.

Noise Shield Extension

Although it is not listed as working offline, in my experience it works fine. Like Relaxing Sounds, you’ll need to open it once online. That downloads small audio loops. Sounds include nature like Park River or Autumn Winds as well as classic white, pink and brown sounds. These sounds help to drown out outside noises or just help you relax. The Noise Sheild extension also allows you to start making noise with a custom keyboard shortcut. I like the timer function so that when the sound stops you can switch to another task.

Videos on YouTube

While you can’t directly play offline videos with your Chromebook, YouTube has some great background music. You can extract audio loops and save them to your Chromebook’s internal storage. Similarly, you can download those videos using desktop software or a Chrome extension like Backtick. I’m usually looking for relaxation or focus. Some of my favorite sounds are the sounds of spaceships like The Enterprise or Battlestar Galactica.

Freesound.org file

I love Ambiance for iOS and Android. That app doesn’t work offline on Chromebooks, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get audio from the source. Freesound.org has a huge library of ambient sounds designed to help you relax. The best tags to look for are ambient and sound. You’ll need to download them first, but you can keep them on the SD card. With VLC now supported on Chromebooks, it’s the ideal player for these file types. VLC allows you to loop audio files on custom playlists.

Listen and relax

Whenever I’m in a noisy environment, especially on an airplane, these tools help me get things done on my Chromebook. I keep a good mix on my Google Drive and keep the extensions around for a bit of variety.
