How to Create Huge, Life-sized Posters With the Rasterbator

Ever wanted to create a poster the size of your wall? I’ve found posters to be an absolute delight – my room is covered with posters of my favorite movies, or unique cartoons, or people I greatly respect. However, there are times when I really want a poster of something I find on the internet and sometimes I’ll just print it out on a piece of paper. How about images that deserve more space on your wall? Can you make one of them with your printer?

The Rasterbator service does exactly that. It takes an image that you choose and enlarges it. It then generates a PDF file that you can print out and assemble on your wall. This is a web app, although you can download a standalone app with no size or resolution restrictions (for those of you with high resolution images).

overview

You can select an image from your hard drive or from an online location.

If you choose to upload an image online, you will be limited to a file size of 1 MB.

After you select an image, you will have the ability to crop and resize it. In this step, you will also be able to adjust your image to the size of the paper on the right side of the screen. If you are using normal 8.5 x 11 paper, choose A4. (A4 should be the default choice, but I want to warn you in advance in case that’s not the case…)

In this step, you will also choose the number of sheets that you want to print this image on. Depending on the original image size, you may not want to enlarge it too much to pixelate like crazy. Likewise, you probably don’t want to waste your $60 in color ink on a rasterbatorized poster.

After clicking Next, you will be asked to confirm your creation.

Click Continue if that’s the size you want.

Now you have some fine-tuning options. You can choose to have a border around each piece of paper in the image — only do this if you plan to have white space around each piece of paper or if you plan to cut those borders out. (I can’t imagine that I would, it sounds like too much work to do.)

You can also choose a maximum dot size — if you have a large image, you can increase your dot size, and if you have a small image, you can decrease your dot size. If you don’t know what to do with this, leave it at the default of 10mm.

Finally, you can choose to print it in black and white, some other monochrome patterns, or full color printing.

Once you’re done with all that jazz, click Rasterbate!

Once the Rasterbation process is complete, you will be greeted with a .pdf download. Accept transfer.
