Launched with the Windows 10 Creators Update, Paint 3D is an upgraded version of our beloved Paint app on Windows. The new application pays more attention to 3D designs in addition to traditional drawing functions. With each update, Microsoft continuously adds interesting features to it.
Before that, Paint 3D did not support saving files as GIFs. But last year, it received an update to save files as videos and GIFs. Anything animated attracts attention including GIFs. Social media would be a boring place without GIFs (and confusion with its pronunciation – JIF or GIF.)
People will assume that they will need some lavish tools to create GIFs, but that’s not always the case. You can create simple GIF images from built-in tools like Paint 3D on Windows.
Now you might be wondering: How do I make a GIF in Paint 3D? And what kind of GIFs can you make? Can they be used on social media? Do not hesitate any longer, go in now to find the answer. Also, check out the bonus tip at the end.
What kind of images can you animate?
You can animate both 3D images and regular 2D images in Paint 3D. Here are the steps for both.
Create GIFs in Paint 3D
Here’s how to go about it.
Step 1: Open the image you want to convert to a video or GIF in Paint 3D. To do that, launch Paint 3D and click the Menu icon at the top. Select Open from it. Navigate to the file.
You can even start from scratch and create a new image with 2D and 3D objects and text.
Step 2: Once the image opens in the app, modify it by adding 2D or 3D text, effects, 3D models, etc. When done, click the Menu icon at the top again.
Step 3: Select Save as from there and click Video Format.
Step 4: Select GIF (video) from the drop-down box available under ‘Save As’ in the top right corner.
Now you can tweak a few things. For example, enter a width and height in Preview to change the size of the GIF. Similarly, choose an animation mode from the six available animation types. Use speed factor scrolling to increase or decrease animation speed.
Click the Adjust Angle & Frame option to reveal more customization options. Here you can choose a predefined frame size.
Step 5: Finally, click the Save button and save the file. Your GIF is ready.
Create GIF text
To create a GIF with animated text, follow these steps:
Step 1: Launch Paint 3D and click the Menu icon. Then select New from it. A blank canvas with a white background will open.
Step 2: Click on the Text tool at the top and select 3D text from the right sidebar. Then start typing on the white background. Change the size and color of the text from the options available on the right. Click anywhere on the canvas to add text.
Step 3: Go to the Canvas option and turn off the Show canvas switch.
Doing so will hide the white background and make your image transparent in Paint 3D.
Step 4: You can skip this step and save your GIF directly. But if you want to improve your GIF, try adding some effects to it.
For that, click on the Effects option at the top and choose an effect from the sidebar.
Step 5: Finally, you need to save the photo. For that, repeat the steps mentioned in the above method, that is, go to Menu > Save as > Video > GIF (video).
Tip: Overlay Stickers on 3D Objects
Do not mistake the sticker in Paint 3D as a regular sticker. They automatically crop according to the available 3D object. You can use it with 3D shapes and text to create unique effects.
To do so, first add a 3D shape or text to the canvas. Then go to the Stickers tab and choose an available sticker or choose a texture. You can even add your custom stickers to overlay 3D objects with custom sticker icons.
Then click the left mouse button and drag the sticker onto the 3D object. You will see that it automatically matches the outer region clipping object. You can combine multiple stickers in this way to add different effects. Change the opacity of the sticker if needed.
Note:
Limit
As you have seen above, you can only create GIF from an image. Paint 3D adds animation to a normal still image. You cannot create GIFs from multiple frames or extract them from videos.
Correct. You can easily use these GIFs on any supported platform.
Make pictures interesting
While the above method doesn’t allow you to actually create proper GIFs, you can at least make your boring images interesting by adding animation to them. We hope Microsoft will add more features and flexibility to the GIF feature in Paint 3D.
