How to Move Photos from iPhone to Google Photos

Google Photos, the free photo storage service, comes pre-installed on many Android phones. It became so popular that even iPhone users wanted to use it even though they had iCloud Photos. Luckily, it’s also available on iOS, and it doesn’t discriminate in terms of its features. What you get on Android is also available on iPad and iPhone. Here we will tell you how to transfer your iPhone photos to Google Photos.

If you recently switched to an Android phone or you want to use the Google Photos service instead of iCloud, this post will help you make the transition. In the former case, you just need to add photos to Google Photos, like in this post. For the second case, you have to install the Google Photos app and disable iCloud. The rest is automatic.

Let’s see in detail how to move iPhone or iCloud photos to Google Photos. But before that, let’s understand Google Photos a bit.

How Google Photos works on iPhone

Google Photos works just like iCloud. Besides allowing you to view photos that are available on your iPhone, it also continuously stores them in the Google cloud. You can delete all photos from your iPhone and keep them in Google Photos. That way, you can free up space on your iPhone. While iCloud also saves space by compressing photos, it doesn’t delete them completely from your phone. So some memory is still occupied.

Speaking of storage, iCloud only offers 5GB of free storage, which is shared with other Apple products. On the other hand, Google Photos offers 15 GB of free storage, which is also shared among other Google products.

However, you can upload unlimited photos if you choose High Quality Backup mode instead of Original Quality. The difference is that in High Quality mode your photos are compressed to 16MP and videos to 1080p. In Original Quality, they are saved in their original size.

Move images to Google Photos

There are two ways to move photos from iPhone to Google Photos. You can do it on your iPhone or iPad itself, or with the help of a computer. Both methods are mentioned below.

If you’re switching to an Android phone, simply install the Google Photos app (in case it’s not already installed) and use the same Google account. All photos on your iPhone will automatically show up. If you want to use Google Photos instead of iCloud, simply turn off iCloud after moving the photos, as shown below.

1. How to transfer photos from iPhone to Google Photos on iPhone

To do that, you need to enable Backup and sync on the Google Photos app on your iPhone. That way, all the photos and videos on your iPhone will automatically back up to Google Photos. This method works in both cases, i.e. whether iCloud Photos is enabled or not.

In case iCloud Photos is turned off, only the photos available on your phone will be transferred to Google Photos. If this feature is enabled, all images, including those on iCloud, are automatically stored in Google Photos. That’s because iCloud Photos is primarily a photo syncing service. This means that any photo stored in iCloud will make a copy of it on your phone. Now that you’ve got a copy and that’s what Google Photos needs, it’ll be saved there too.

To save space on iPhone, Apple lets you choose between two iCloud settings — Optimize iPhone storage and Download & Keep Originals. When the former is enabled, the primary copy is saved on iCloud and you only see one optimized version. This feature only starts working when your phone is running low on memory. In case your phone has enough memory, it will also save an original on your iPhone. The second option stores the original on your phone and also in iCloud.

Note

Here’s how to go about it.

2. How to transfer photos from iPhone to Google Photos on computer

There are two ways to do that. The first one is for offline photos and the second one is for photos stored in iCloud.

Move photos offline

In the first case, you need to transfer photos from iPhone to computer using file transfer apps or connect it via USB cable. Once the images are on your system, open photos.google.com on your PC through any web browser. Sign in with your Google account. Click Upload at the top and select Computer. Then navigate to the iPhone files you recently copied to your system. Select files to upload them to Google Photos.

Press CTRL + A (Windows) and CMD + A (macOS) to select all files.

A ZIP file will be created. So you need to download and extract it. After extracting, open photos.google.com. Click the Upload icon, then Calculator. Navigate to the ZIP folder you extracted. Add photos and videos.

What happens when you add images to Google Photos on your computer

In either case, uploaded files will automatically show up on the Google Photos app on your iPhone, as long as you’re using the same Google account. You don’t have to turn on any settings. Even if Backup and sync is turned off, photos will still sync because it’s automatic. They won’t take up any storage on your iPhone because the photos are technically only in the cloud.

Patient

If you have a lot of files on your iPhone, this will take time, depending on the number of photos and videos. The overall process also depends on internet speed. So please be patient while moving the photos. If you want to go back to iCloud from Google Photos, you can do that too.
