Apple iPhone has the best vibration motor with strong tactile among all mobile phones. Apple has included neat tweaks in iOS to take advantage of haptics. You can create custom vibration patterns and assign them to specific contacts. This is the way.
By using custom vibration patterns for Ringtones, Text Tones, New Emails, and specific contacts, you can guess which contact is trying to contact you just by the vibration pattern.
Create custom vibrations
The ability to create custom vibration patterns on iPhone is hidden in the Settings menu. Here’s how you can access and create custom vibration patterns on your iPhone.
Step 1: Open Settings on iPhone.
Step 2: Go to the Sound & Haptics menu.
Step 3: Select the type of alert you want to customize with a different vibration. Here, we will use Ringtone.
Step 4: Tap Vibrate.
Step 5: By default, iOS uses the vibration pattern from the Standard menu. From the Customize menu you will find the option Create a new Vibration.
Step 6: It will open a new Vibrate menu. Tap on the blank screen and it will start creating a vibration pattern.
You can keep tapping the screen to vibrate continuously, lift a finger to pause and create unique vibration patterns.
Step 7: After creating the flutter style, you can check the live preview at the bottom.
Step 8: Click Play and you can sneak a peek at the generated vibration pattern.
Step 9: When you are satisfied with the vibration pattern, tap the Save icon at the top.
Step 10: Give it a name and click the Save button.
You will find the vibration pattern you just created in the Customize menu. You can create as many vibrations as you like.
Specify a custom vibration pattern for a contact
Now that you’ve created custom vibration patterns on your iPhone, you can assign them to selected contacts on your iPhone. Go through the steps below.
Step 1: Open the Contacts app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Search for a contact and open the contact information menu.
Step 3: Click the Edit button at the top.
Step 4: Scroll down and select Ringtone.
Step 5: It will open the Ringtone menu. Tap Vibrate.
Step 6: Select a custom vibration from the following menu.
Go back to the main screen and select Done at the top. Whenever you receive a call from a specific contact, it will use the selected custom vibration pattern to notify you.
Use a Custom Vibration for iMessage Contacts
Apple allows you to set a custom vibration pattern for specific iMessage contacts. Here’s what you need to do.
Step 1: Open the Messages app on your iPhone and select a conversation.
Step 2: Tap the contact name at the top and open the Info menu.
Step 3: Go to Text Tone and open the Vibrate menu.
Step 4: Select custom vibration and return to the main menu.
Step 5: Tap Done at the top and you’ll see a custom vibration set for the contact’s text tone.
iMessage will use a custom vibration pattern for all incoming messages from the contact.
Disable vibration pattern for incoming notifications
You can turn off vibrations for all other apps and email notifications on your iPhone.
Step 1: Open Settings on your iPhone and go to the Sound & Haptics menu.
Step 2: Select the type of text that you want to turn off vibration.
Step 3: Go to the Vibrate menu and select None from the following menu.
It is recommended to disable vibration for other apps and enable it only for selected contacts to clear up confusion.
Remove custom vibration
If you no longer need to use the vibration pattern you created on your iPhone, you can easily remove it from the Settings menu.
Step 1: Launch iPhone Settings and open the Sound & Haptics menu.
Step 2: Select any menu from Sounds and vibration patterns.
Step 3: Select the Vibrate menu.
Step 4: Tap Edit at the top.
Step 5: Click on the red icon and select Delete.
Main vibration patterns on iPhone
Some messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Messenger allow you to use custom sound notifications, but you cannot use custom vibration patterns for them. There is no way to use custom vibration patterns for WhatsApp or Telegram.
