How to Create an Animated GIF from a Screen Recording

Animated GIFs are all over the Internet and social media these days, but most people really don’t know how to create them. If you know how to create it properly, you may realize that it’s really not that easy, especially when using complex applications like Photoshop. (Of course, the iPhone 6s’ Live Photos make this process a little less tedious.)

One solution to this problem is to simply use an application that records the content on your computer screen and saves the footage as an animated GIF. This means you can convert anything from computer instructions to converting videos to GIFs, so there’s no need to manually convert videos to animated GIF frames.

A free app for Windows or Mac called LICEcap can be of great help with this.

Turn screen recordings into GIF animations

First, download the free LICEcap app. Do that by visiting the Cockos Incorporated website and scrolling until you get to the download link for Windows or OS X.

After you install the program, launch it and see that it looks like a weird transparent window. Sure, there’s a reason. Anything inside that window is what LICEcap will capture and turn into an animated GIF.

Before you start recording, let’s explore some of the options that you can pre-edit. At the bottom of the window, you can edit the pixel size of the recording as well as the maximum FPS or frames per second. This determines how smooth the GIF will play back.

Tip: Drag the corner of the window to resize, it will automatically resize the pixels to the new size of the window.

When you’re ready, click Record… to complete some settings before recording begins. In the dialog window, you can pre-select the file name and save location, as well as other options such as displaying the title frame or clicking. You can also tell the app to automatically stop recording after a certain number of seconds, which you can enable at the bottom of the window.

When you click Rescue, LICEcap will automatically start recording the desired area after three seconds of pre-posting. It’s an odd UI choice, so brace yourself for it to start quickly. Click Pause during if you want to stop briefly or rearrange the position of the window. Otherwise, when the recording is finished, click Stop.

Just like that, in the save location, you’ll see a new animated GIF of exactly what you recorded on the screen. Check out the creation courtesy of Guid Tech’s YouTube channel.
