How To Create a Friend List In Facebook Chat

Since the launch of the Facebook chat feature, it has become quite popular among Facebook users. Looks like a live chat tool in Facebook is needed. But managing that isn’t easy, especially if you have a large number of Facebook friends.

Imagine you log into Facebook and you have 50 friends online. Before you can think about anything, you’ve got a pop-up chat window. While some of them may be important, you’ll definitely want to get rid of others quickly. But don’t be rude or unfriend those people.

A good way to accomplish it is to create a friend list. It helps you organize your huge friends list, categorize them and appear online/offline with them selectively. This guide tells you how you can do that.

Here are the steps.

Go to the chat board in Facebook by clicking Chat button given at the bottom right.

Select “Friends List” on the chat board, type a new listing name and press enter. A new list will be created. When you hover over the name of this list, a “EditorThe link will appear. Click this link. It pops up a new window. Select your friends to include in the list by clicking on the friend’s thumbnail, or you can enter your friend’s name in the search box provided.

You can exclude any lists from the chat by unchecking them in the “Friends Lists” tab. For example, in the screenshot provided below, I excluded the “Business” and “friends” lists from the chat.

How to go offline

Next to each listing, you’ll see a green switch; when the switch is off, you’ll be signed out of chat for that list. Friends on the disabled list won’t be able to see that you’re online and therefore they won’t be able to ping you.

A green switch is shown next to each listing. You can toggle that switch to go online or offline. One drawback of this function is that it is not like the stealth mode in other chat tools where you can see if the other person is online or not. Going offline for a list means you can’t see the status of your friends on that list.

That’s how you can organize your Facebook friends list and chat selectively without offending anyone.
