An active internet connection is essential for a smart device like the Amazon Echo to function properly. And the beauty of it is that you don’t require a super fast connection to use it. But what if you don’t have Wi-Fi at home? What if the Wi-Fi connection is having problems or is down for maintenance? In such situations, the Echo does not become a showpiece.
What if you have an Echo device in your car and you need to use it? Well, you can certainly use it at any time. All you need to do is turn on the hotspot on your phone and the Echo will run as normal.
Previously, this function was not available when a person had to use two mobile devices to set up a mobile hotspot. But in 2016, Amazon included a feature to connect the Echo to hotspots.
Here, we’ll show you how to connect your Echo device to your phone’s hotspot and some solutions if you’re having problems. Start.
Echo not connecting to Hotspot
If you set up Echo for the first time, the hotspot won’t work. It is possible that the option may not be available. We recommend setting up your Echo over Wi-Fi first.
Second, you’ll also need active mobile data on your phone to set up the hotspot for the first time. Otherwise, the Alexa app won’t connect the hotspot to the Echo. Also, make sure your Alexa app is up to date.
Connect Echo to Hotspot
Once you have met the above requirements, follow the steps mentioned below carefully to set up the hotspot on Echo.
Step 1: Plug in your Echo and make sure you have an active internet connection on your phone.
Step 2: Open hotspot settings on your mobile device and note down the hotspot name and password.

Step 3: Open the Alexa app on your phone and tap Devices at the bottom.
Step 4: Tap on Echo & Alexa, then the name of your Echo device.
Step 5: Click Change next to Wi-Fi Network.

Step 6: The app will take you to the Echo Wi-Fi setup page. Tap Continue. We assume you already have the Echo set up so the orange light mentioned on the screen won’t appear. Therefore, tap on the option Don’t see the orange glow.
Step 7: Hold the action button on your Echo for at least ten seconds until an orange light appears, then tap Continue on the mobile app. Alexa will announce that it is in setup mode.
Step 8: You will be taken to the Manually Connect to Echo page. As mentioned on the screen, go to the Wi-Fi settings on your device and connect to the Amazon network.
You will get a notification that Wi-Fi has no internet connection. Tap it, then tap Yes in the pop-up to stay connected. Be careful in this step as you may run into some problems.
Step 9: Now go back to the Alexa app and tap Continue.
Step 10: The app will take you to the Wi-Fi Selection screen. Scroll down and tap Use this device as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Step 11: Enter the hotspot details you saved in step two and tap Connect. Alexa will announce that she is ready to connect.
You may be asked to update the app. For that, tap Go to app store. In my case the app was the latest version but I still had the option to update, but then I was taken directly to the above screen to enter the hotspot details.
Step 12: Go to your phone’s hotspot settings and turn it on. Alexa will notify her that she is trying to connect. Stay on the hotspot settings page until Alexa confirms that the connection is successful.
Step 13: Return to the Alexa app to complete the setup. Tap Continue to complete the process.
Note: Be patient as it may take about 1-2 minutes for Alexa to complete setup.
Congratulations! You have successfully connected your Echo device to the portable hotspot.
You only need to follow the steps above once. Once you’re done with the setup, the next time you want to connect your Echo to the hotspot, just turn on the hotspot on your phone and the Echo will connect automatically.
