We’ve covered a lot of torrenting apps for Windows, Mac, and Android, but you can also torrent on Chromebooks. With solid protection against viruses, you’re less likely to have problems with torrents and malware. The best Chromebook compatible app I’ve found is JStorrent, so here’s how to set it up.

If your Chromebook is infected with a virus: Resetting it is easy with Recovery Media.
Free or paid version?
JStorrent is a JavaScript (get it? JS) based client that is freely available on GitHub. The author sells it in the Chrome Web Store for a few dollars. The Chrome Web Store client updates automatically and will sync across your Chrome devices. The free version needs updating and manual installation. I wanted to support the author, so I paid for it.
Set your download location
If you have enough space on your internal SSD, you can leave your download location there. My torrents are a bit larger so I changed the download location to my USB flash drive. One cool feature with JStorrent is that you don’t have to use your Chromebook’s default location for downloads.
Using the SSD on your Chromebook for downloads? Most flash drives have a limited lifespan, so why waste it on a few downloads when the download location can be easily changed?
Other JStorrent Options
JStorrent works fine with default options, but on some trackers I need to enable Spoofing – report to privacy trackers as uTorrent. Most users will want to leave Automatically start downloading new torrents as checked. sometimes i leave Show Download Progress Notification unchecked – that way I won’t be disturbed while working.
Find your torrent and start downloading
With the optional JSTorrent Helper Extension, all you need to do is right-click a magnet link to add it to the client. If not, open torrent from Chromebook’ Download folder and JStorrent will add it immediately.
If you use the default options, the torrent will start. If your torrent has a lot of files, you can skip part of the download. Click torrent in the top section. In the bottom section, right click on the file and select Skip download.
See progress
JStorrent tells you the status in the upper part of the program. You will know the amount of completed downloads and the download speed. If you click on the bottom, JSTorrent will tell you the size of the swarm and the percentage of individual files that have arrived.
Some minor concerns
Chromebooks aren’t fast when you compare them to other desktop or laptop computers. They don’t have much RAM and can’t multiprocess as well as other computers. That’s not a big deal, unless you’re trying to download a large amount of content. Most of the time I don’t notice a difference in speed. But when I try to watch a video and do a bunch of torrents, everything slows down.
Do you know? BitTorrent has a wide range of free and legal downloads, including episodes of Doctor Who.
Some torrents don’t work, especially those from BitTorrent mentioned directly above. Many free torrents work well for me. Since I take my Chromebook everywhere, I’m more likely to get some downloads whenever I find a good high-speed connection.
