Buying a new computer and moving data and programs from your old PC to your new PC isn’t always that simple.
Usually, data migration is easy because we just need to copy the data from the old machine to the new machine. However, applications cannot be copied in the same way. You need to install them on your new computer. Then there are compatibility issues too. For example, some work on Windows XP but cannot be used in Windows 7 or Vista. ( Courteous image – dirty )
Another problem is that you need to reset preferences (or custom settings) of old programs. So all in all, it’s a cumbersome task and that’s exactly what we intend to tackle in this post.
This post will show you an easy and free way to clone your old computer on a new one. The old machine will actually run inside the new machine in a virtual environment. (Also read our running desktop apps from the browser and the guide to creating virtualized apps, both of which use virtualization technology.)
To do this, we will use two free programs: Sun Virtual Box and VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone.
The first person will play the virtual machine and the second person is responsible for doing the copy. Let’s get started.
Download programs
To download Sun Virtual Box, go to Filehippo:
Sun Virtual Box – Filehippo’s Mirror
And here is the link to download VMware Converter:
Standalone VMware vCenter Switch
VMware will send you an email with information to activate your account. After you import, choose manual download:
Install VMware Converter Standalone
1. Select Install locally.
2. VMware start the wizard, click Next:
3. Run the client.
Now hit Switch Machine:
Select Powered on the device:
I’m doing this test on my computer. I also tested on remote machine and it works fine but you need to have full control over that machine. This means stopping the Firewall and the user with administrative rights.
This is the type of VMware Workstation we are creating.
You also have to choose a destination. It is very important that the destination has at least the same amount of storage space that your current computer has.
Install Oracle VM VirtualBox
This must be done in your new computer so that you can access your old programs.
Check Start Oracle VM VirtualBox 3.2.10 after installation.
The program will start, if you press New, the wizard will start:
Here is the wizard:
Enter a Name and select the Operating System type:
Press the button to invoke the Virtual Media Manager Dialog. This way you can add the copy you made:
Add hard drive:
Select the file that VMware converter created:
Before you start your machine, go to System installation and activate IO APIC:
Go to the System tab:
Now you just need to select the virtual machine and press Start:
That’s it. You should now have your old PC running inside the Sun Virtual Box on your new computer. You can use it whenever you want.
