Quick Tips
- Open the Photos app, select Albums, and tap ‘Duplicates’ under Utilities to clean up duplicate photos.
- Use the Remo Duplicate Photos Remover app to delete duplicate or similar photos from your iPhone.
Method 1: Use the Duplicates Feature in the Photos App
Finding and deleting duplicate photos individually on your iPhone can be a tough nut to crack. Thankfully, iOS 16 introduced a ‘Duplicates’ feature in the Photos app to help you clean or merge all duplicate photos in one go.
Step 1: Open the Photos app, select Albums from the bottom, and tap Duplicates under ‘Utilities’.
Note: If you can’t find the Duplicate album in the Photos app, lock your iPhone and connect it to a power source to let it index your photo library.
Step 2: Tap Select at the top right corner and mark all duplicate photos. Remove them using the Trash icon at the bottom right.
Step 3: Alternatively, tap Select All at the top left corner, and select Merge to let iOS combine the highest quality photo versions and remove its duplicates. You can find the deleted duplicates in the ‘Recently Deleted’ album.
Method 2: Clean up Duplicate Photos Using Remo Duplicate Photos Remover
If you can’t find photos in the Duplicates album or iOS is taking too long to index photos, use the Remo Duplicate Photos Remover app to identify and clean duplicates on your iPhone.
Step 1: Install the Remo Duplicate Photos Remover from the App Store. Open the app, and tap Allow Full Access to grant it your photo library access.
Step 2: Tap Scan and wait a few seconds to let it identify duplicates.
Step 3: Mark the duplicate photos you wish to remove and tap the Trash icon at the bottom right. Confirm it using Delete when prompted to move them to the ‘Recently Deleted’ album.
Tip: Besides cleaning duplicates, you can remove similar photos using the ‘Similar’ tab in the Remo Duplicate Photos Remover app.
Step 4: To remove deleted duplicates permanently from your iPhone, open the Recently Deleted album under Utilities in the Photos app and mark all photos.
Step 5: Tap the three-dot menu at the bottom right, and select Delete.
Tips to Stop iPhone From Duplicating Photos
- Don’t use multiple cloud services: Use a single cloud service e.g. iCloud to sync and organize photos across devices.
- Disable Live Photos: Open the Camera app and tap the Concentric circle icon at the top right to disable capturing live photos.
- Avoid taking Burst shots: They can quickly fill your device’s memory with duplicate photos.
- Disable Smart HDR: This will avoid saving HDR and non-HDR versions of a photo reducing duplicate images in your photo library. Head to iPhone Settings > Camera, and toggle off Smart HDR.
