How to Change Download Location in Google Chrome

When you download files and media from the web, you don’t want to put everything in one folder on your PC or Mac. The current market leader, Google Chrome, offers the option to change the download folder location on computers and mobile devices. Here’s how you can change the download location in Google Chrome on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android OS.

Maybe you’re downloading the latest thanksgiving wallpapers, and you obviously wouldn’t want to mix it up with software and other stuff downloaded from Google Chrome.

Let’s start with Google Chrome on Windows, then we’ll move on to another operating system.

Google Chrome for Windows

By default, Google Chrome saves files to the Downloads folder on your PC. However, you can change the folder location from the Settings menu. This is the way.

Step 1: Open Google Chrome on Windows.

Step 2: Click on the three-dot menu in the upper right corner.

Step 3: Go to the Settings menu.

Step 5: Click Download.

You can also create a new folder in File Manager or save files from Google Chrome to a OneDrive or Google Drive folder. Select a relevant folder and click Select Folder on the dialog box.

From now on, Google Chrome will use the specified folder as the default download location on the PC.

Google Chrome for Mac

Unlike Google Chrome’s mobile apps, the browser uses the same UI/UX on Windows and Mac. The steps to change Chrome’s download location are exactly the same as mentioned above.

Instead of selecting a folder from the File Manager, the only difference is that you need to select a new folder from the Finder menu. Here’s what you need to do.

Step 1: Go to Google Chrome Settings on Mac.

You can create a new folder in Finder or select an existing folder. If you have OneDrive or Google Drive integrated with Finder, you can select a folder from these cloud storage services and sync downloaded files between all platforms.

Google Chrome for Android

Understandably, Google Chrome saves downloaded files to the phone memory. If your Android phone supports an SD card slot, you can change the location from the device memory to the external SD card.

Step 1: Open Google Chrome on Android.

Step 2: Tap the three-dot menu at the top.

Step 3: Select Download.

Step 5: Tap the Settings gear at the top.

Step 6: Tap Download location and select SD Card.

If you have not installed an SD card on your Android phone, there is no way to change the download location folder on the phone memory.

From the same menu, you should enable the ‘Ask where to save files’ switch. Then when you try to save media from Google Chrome, it will ask you to choose Download folder or SD card. That way you can change the download location without the hassle of Google Chrome Settings.

Google Chrome for iPhone

iPhone does not support SD card. You’ll have to rely on another trick to change download locations on the go.

Step 1: Open Google Chrome on iPhone.

Step 2: Whenever you come across a media to download on your iPhone, long press on it and select Open media in new tab.

Step 3: From the new tab page, you will see an “Open in” option at the bottom.

Step 4: Moving will open the Share menu. Scroll down and select Save to file select.

It will open the default Files app on iPhone. You can choose iPhone storage or any of the built-in cloud storage services to save files.

Unfortunately, iPhone won’t remember your preferred folder for saving Google Chrome downloads. You’ll have to do it every time to change the Google Chrome download location on your iPhone.
